Lesson Plan: Mother Goose is on the Loose (Grade 2 and 3)

Outcomes:

- Students will perform, listen to, and reflect on rhythm, using voice, and instruments. (Specifically through keeping the beat, singing or playing eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes)

- Students will perform, listen to, and reflect on melody and pitch using voice, and instruments to express ideas, and understandings.

- Students will perform and listen to harmony using instruments.

Students will perform, listen to, and reflect on form using voice.

Resources:

- Computer with good speakers, or iPads

- Glockenspiels

- Temple blocks or woodblocks

- Guiro

Key Terms: Nursery Rhymes, rhythm, ABA form

Class Set Up:

- Have students split up into four groups.

- Each group gets a glockenspiel, temple block, guiro, and xylophone.

- Each group will also get an iPad with the appropriate Prezi uploaded. (if using iPads)

Plan: (To occur over several classes)

Discussion: As a class discuss what a Nursery Rhyme is.

Group Activity: Divide the class into four groups and assign each group one of the four Nursery Rhymes to present to the class.

Share: Each group presents their Nursery Rhyme.

Rhythm: Perform the four rhythms on slide 5 and as class match up which rhythms go with which Nursery Rhyme. Practice chanting the rhythms.

Group Activity: All group members read through the words of “Mother Goose on the Loose” and listen to the recording several times on the iPad.

Class Activity: As a whole class sing the song and go through the B section call and response chant, matching the appropriate Nursery Rhyme with the appropriate clue.

Group Activity: Group members work together to learn the accompaniment parts is together on slide 12 using the notation and recordings. Encourage students to take turns learning each part and get them to try and perform the piece like in the recording.

Perform: Once groups have had a chance to practice, have groups perform, or make a recording of their performance to share with the class.
