It's a Canadian Celebration

NGES Spring Concert Script - June 16th, 2017

Oh Canada, our true North strong and free

It’s almost July first, when Canada turns 150

But what does this mean, why does it matter?

We get to throw a party and make quite a clatter.

Song - Early years wonder on and sing Happy Birthday with instruments

As part of this party we decided to share,

All the things that we’ve learned to show how we care.

Each year we learn more about our world and yours.

About culture, history, change, and explorers.

We’ll share with you now, what we learn in each grade.

You’ll see it’s a lot, we don’t have it “made in the shade.”

Settle in, listen up, and turn off your phone.

This concert will be great and you’ll eventually go home.

To enhance this experience we’ll also sing songs.

Sit back, relax, and nothing’ll go wrong.

Grade 4

The first you will meet are our school’s Grade 4s

Who are learning what it means to explore.

Norse, Cartier, and Cabot came to see what they’d find.

It’s a wonder the weather didn’t change their minds.

From this we look at how we impact the land.

What Canada might look like, if we’d all lend a hand.

Here come our two songs that have local connection.

One of early days the other’s an exception.

The first speaks of early days of New Scotland no doubt.

The other speaks of getting out and about.

Songs - Ballad of New Scotland

Nowhere with You

Grade 2

In grade 2 we talk about how things change.

After all, life would be boring if it was always the same.

For example we meet new people and grow.

We change grades, cut our hair, and get old. Don’t you know?

Here are 2 songs from Canada about life and money.

Hope you enjoy and find the second funny.

Songs - Four Strong Winds

If I had a Million Dollars

Grade 3

Now onto grade 3 which is all about diversity.

We’ve been looking at diverse cultures to gain clarity.

Our focus is the Atlantic. NS, NB, NL, and PEI.

Where the Gaelic, Acadian, and African settlers could not pass by.

Before them we know, the Mi’kmaq were here.

They now share their land with us, that much is clear.

We’ll now sing 2 songs that show what we’ve learned.

The first sung by Mi’kmaq about friendships they earned.

The second you’ll know, it’s by Burton Cummings.

I hope you enjoy both, and our drumming. (songs)

Songs - Friendship Song

Share the Land

Grade P/1

In music we keep beat, clap rhythms, and sing songs.

We’ve learned about high/low, fast/slow, though class is not long.

We dance, play games, and learn how to work together.

Music class is one of the places we learn to be better.

Today we will share two songs of Canadian ways

One about children, the other about spring days.

Songs - Sing Sing

The Canadian Way

Grade Primary

In primary we learn about identity.

What I like, how I feel, and what it means to be me.

We will present a song about how we feel.

And a fantastic natural light show, that is real.

Songs - Sometimes I feel Happy

Northern Lights

Grade 4/5

In Grade 4/5 we start looking at our history.

About ancient times, how things change, and society.

We are learning skills to help us solve why,

We live the way we do, and are able to get by.

We’re singing you two songs, one in English, one au Francais.

We’ve been learning how these two cultures influenced our way.

J’etend le Moulin is about a mill-wheel.

When the Night Feels my Song is about how someone feels.

Songs - J’etend le moulin

When the Night Feels my Song

Grade 1

In grade 1 we learn about being different and how to care.

We all have needs and wants, but still have to share.

We learn how to care for our earth, which is a big task.

We’ve learned how to problem solve. Need to know how? Just ask.

We will sing two nice songs for you to enjoy.

One about caring, another with numbers, oh boy!

Songs - Teagan’s Lullaby

1, 2, 3, 4

Grade 5/6

Last, but not least is grade 5/6, we are here.

We are learning how to be global citizens this year.

We’ve gained understanding of our home until now.

Time now to focus across the world, but how?

We research, raise money, and our resources we share,

With those less fortunate, because we care.

We’re gaining understanding of what role we must play.

To help and improve our world each day.

Now we will share two empowering songs.

They reflect how we feel, how we need to stand strong.

Songs - Stompa

Inner Ninja

Choir

Before we end this concert we have a few more,

That showcase what the school choir is for.

We meet each week to sing our songs.

We are from different grades and learn to get along.

We work together on a common goal.

We dedicate our time, we are on a roll.

For our first song is about a problem at hand.

Our second song was by a legendary man.

We don’t know what we’ve got til’ it’s gone,

Is something the world needs to realize before long.

Songs - Big Yellow Taxi

Hallelujah

Thank you for listening, you’ve been a great audience.

Here is the last part of our Canadian Celebration from us.

Finale - Something to Sing About

Sometimes I’m Feeling Happy - Lisa Gillam (Newfoundland)

Sometimes I’m feeling happy so I laugh and smile

Sometimes I’m feeling sadness so I cry a while

Sometimes I feel afraid and want to hide away

Sometimes I don’t feel anything and that’s okay

Sometimes I feel excited so I jump and shout

Sometimes I feel so mad I want to stomp and pout

No matter what I’m feeling if it’s good or bad

The best thing I can do is tell my mom or dad

Northern Lights

The moon is out, the stars are bright, it’s quiet on this winter night

And in the sky so cold and clear, the northern lights start to appear.

Red lights, sparkle

Green lights sparkle,

Blue lights, sparkle,

Yellow lights sparkle.

But when the sun pokes out her head,

It’s time for the lights to go to bed.

Sing! Sing! - Lisa Gillam

Sing, sing an April song,

Sing for days so warm and long.

Sing for sun that melts the snow.

Sing for spring and watch all good things grow.

Sing a merry may song,

Sing for birds that sing along.

Sing for flow’rs and buzzing bees.

Sing for leaves on the green, green, trees.

Sing, sing for the month of June.

Sing a warm and happy tune.

Sing for bugs and butterflies.

Sing for sunshine in our little eyes.

The Canadian Way - J.W. Beattie

Stamp, stamp, stamp, hear the feet of many children

From the mountain, river, and shores!

Who with smiling faces take their schoolroom places

With their friends and neighbors once more.

Stamp, stamp, stamp, hear the feet of many children,

Five million ready today!

We work together, we learn together,

The good Canadian way.

Teagan’s Lullaby - Fred Penner

Rock-a-bye, baby mine,

Sleep and dream today.

Tomorrow you will wake to find

You’re grown and on your way,

To places you have never seen.

But for now, close your eyes;

Wait for morning.

Rock me, please;

Hold me tight,

We’re a family.

I’ll try to take my time with you;

And slowly let you see.

That I’m a child with feelings too;

Late at night, when I cry;

It means, “I love you.”

1234 - Leslie Feist

One, two, three, four

Beavers walk ‘cross the floor

I love counting

Counting to the number four

Oh you’re counting

Counting with me

To one less than five

And one more than three

Oh, we’re counting to four

Oh, let’s count some more

One, two, three, four

Loons pecking on the door

I love counting

Counting to the number four

I see four here

I see four there

My favorite number

Nothing can compare

Oh, we’re counting to four

Oh, let’s count some more

One, two, three, four

Moose strolls on the shore

I love counting

Counting to the number four

Oh you’re counting

Counting with me

To one less than five

And one more than three

Oh, we’re counting to four

Oh, let’s count some more

Four Strong Winds - Neil Young

Chorus: Four strong winds that blow lonely.

Seven seas that run high.

All those things that don'tchange,

Come what may

If the good times are all gone,

And I'm bound for moving on

I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

Think I'll go out to Alberta,

Weather's good there in the fall.

I got some friends that I could go

To working for.

Still I wish you'd change yourmind,

If I asked you one more time

But we've been through that

A hundred times or more

Chorus

If I get there before the snow flies

And if things are looking good

You could meet me if I sent you

Down the fare.

But by then it would be winter,

Ain't too much for you to do.

And those winds sure can blow cold

Way out there

Chorus

Still I wish you'd change your mind,

If I asked you one more time

But we've been through that

A hundred times or more

Chorus

I'll look for you if I'm ever pass this way

If I Had a Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you a house

I would buy you a house

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you furniture for your house

Maybe a nice bed and tub

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you a K-Car

a nice safe automobile

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy your love.

If I Had a million dollars

I'd build a tree fort in our yard.

If I Had a million dollars

You could help, it wouldn't be that hard.

If I Had a million dollars

We could put a tiny little fridge in there

If I had a million dollars,

I’d be rich

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you a fur coat

not a real fur coat that's cruel

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you an exotic pet

Like a llama or an emu

If I Had a million dollars

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy you a monkey

haven't you always wanted a monkey?

If I Had a million dollars

I'd buy your love

If I Had a million dollars

I'd build a tree fort in our yard.

If I Had a million dollars

You could help, it wouldn't be that hard.

If I Had a million dollars

We could put a tiny little fridge in there

If I had a million dollars,

I’d be rich

If I Had a million dollars,

Share the Land - The Guess Who

Have you been around

Have you done your share of comin' down

On different things that people do

Have you been aware

You got brothers and sisters who care

About what's gonna happen to you in a year from now

Chorus: Maybe I'll be there to shake your hand

Maybe I'll be there to share the land

That they'll be givin' away

When we all live together

I'm talkin' 'bout together now

Maybe I'll be there to shake your hand

Maybe I'll be there to share the land

That they'll be givin' away

When we all live together

Did you pay your dues

Did you read the news

This mornin' when the paper landed in your yard

Do you know their names

Can you play their games

Without losin' track and comin' down a bit too hard

A Ballad of New Scotland - Alan Mills

Let’s away to new Scotland, where Plenty sits queen

O’er as happy a country

as ever was seen;

She blesses her subjects,

both little and great,

With each a good house,

and a pretty estate,

Derry down, down,

down, derry down.

There’s wood, and there’s water,

There’s wild fowl and tame;

In the forest good ven’son,

good fish in the stream,

Good grass for our cattle,

good land for our plough

Good wheat to be reap’d,

and good barley to mow.

Derry, down, down,

down, derry down.

No landlords are there

poor tenants to tease,

No lawyers to bully,

nor stewards to seize;

But each honest fellow’s

a landlord, and dares

To spend on himself

the whole fruit of his cares.

Derry down, down,

down, derry down.

Nowhere With You - Joel Plaskett

Hey good looking, why the frown?

You always look better when it's upside down

You say you got nowhere that you're going to

Can I go nowhere with you?

I took the long highway into town,

Spent my pennies bummin' around,

Tryin' to find a way to have some fun out around,

Can I go nowhere with you?

Paid the bus fare, saw a show,

Sat on the shore where the waves did flow.

Didn't see a single face that I knew,

'Till I went nowhere with you.

Can I tag along today?

We'll kill some time, it looks like you might

need a little company,

Life’s so sweet and we should all be free.

Hey good looking, why the frown?

You always look better when it's upside down

You say you got nowhere that you're going to

Can I go nowhere with you?

Here we go,

na, na, na, na, na, na, na

need a little company,

Life’s so sweet and we should all be free.

whoa whoa whoa whoa!

If you feel tired and want to go home,

I'm still wired, I can go it alone,

Same time next week at a quarter past three?

And we can go nowhere again.

If you show up there then you know I will too,

Can I go nowhere with...

Hey good looking, why the frown?

Got too many bills to pay

Slow down, nothing's gonna disappear

If you give yourself some room

To move to the music you hear

Clappa your hands, stompa your feet

Looking to the greener side

Trying to find a better way

Slow down, open up your big brown eyes

Feel the rhythm in your heart

Nothing is wrong, if you move to the beat

Clappa your hands, stompa your feet

Stompa your feet

When you can't seem to shake off all the feelings that are breaking

Little pieces of the music that are in you

All the pain that you feel

Gotta get up, listen to me

When the Night Feels my Song - Bedouin Soundclash

I'm on the rocky road, Heading down off the mountain slope, And as my steps echo (echo) louder than before. Another day is done, Say good-bye to the setting sun, See what I found, turn back to the ground just like before. Pre-chorus: Hey hey heeeyyy, HEY Beautiful Day HEY Beautiful Day. Heeeeeyyyy,

hey hey hey HEY Beautiful Day HEY Beautiful Day. Chorus: When the night

feels my song, I'll be home,

I'll be home. Into the undergrowth, Twist and turn on a lonely road. In the twilight the day turns to night and I'm alone.

And when the light has left, I'm not sure of my *every* step Follow the wind that pushes me west back to my bed. Pre-chorus Chorus x 3

Wavin’ Flag

Chorus:

When I get older

I will be stronger

They'll call me 'Freedom'

Just like a wavin' flag

And then it goes back, and then it goes back

And then it goes back, and then it goes...

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome

But violent-prone, poor people zone,

But it's my home, all I have known,

Where I got grown, streets we would roam

Out of the darkness, I came the farthest

Among the hardest survival

Learn from these streets, it can be bleak,

Accept no defeat, surrender retreat

Bridge:

So we strugglin'

Fightin' to eat

And we wonderin'

When we'll be free

So we patiently wait

For that fateful day

It's not far away,

But for now we say:

Chorus

So many wars, settlin' scores,

Bringing us promises, leaving us poor,

I heard them say, love is the way

Love is the answer, that's what they say

But look how they treat us, make us believers

We fight their battles, then they deceive us

Try to control us, they couldn't hold us

'Cause we just move forward like Buffalo soldiers

Bridge

Chorus

And everybody will be singing it

And you and I will be singing it

And we all will be singing it. x2

Chorus x2

When I get older, when I get older

I will be stronger, just like a wavin' flag

Just like a wavin' flag, just like a wavin' flag

flag, flag,

Just like a wavin' flag.

As a whole school, we are learning "Something to Sing About" by Oscar Brand. Below are the lyrics we are singing for this song at our Canada Celebration! Please take this opportunity to check out these lyrics in preparation for our concert.

Something to Sing About - Oscar Brand

I have walked ‘cross the sand of the

Grand Banks of Newfoundland,

Lazed on the ridge of the Miramichi.

Seen the waves tear and roar

At the stone coast of Labrador

Watched them roll back

To the Great Northern Sea

Chorus:

From the Vancouver Island to the

Alberta Highland

'Cross the Prairies, the lakes to Ontario's towers

From the sound of Mount Royal's chimes,

Up to the Maritimes

Something to sing about, this land of ours

Yes there's something to sing about,

Tune up a string about

Call out in chorus or quietly hum

Of a land that is still young,

With a ballad that are still unsung

Telling the promise of great things to come

Chorus:

From the Vancouver Island to the

Alberta Highland

'Cross the Prairies, the lakes to Ontario's towers

From the sound of Mount Royal's chimes,

Up to the Maritimes

Something to sing about, this land of ours
