From the 11th until the 15th of September, the Year 11s of GJS embarked on a journey together along with 8 supervising teachers in the hopes of contributing positively to the surrounding community in Kuningan, Cirebon. However, conducting community service was not the only goal in mind. The Week Without Walls was also a way for students and teachers to interact outside of school, allowing many people to see each other outside of school for the first time and bond with one another without formal constraints.
All 5 days of the trip were filled with many learning experiences, time for reflection, and most importantly time to bond between peers, students and teachers alike.
During the trip, students and teachers participated in various activities that provided new experiences for many and lessons regarding the world around them. Some activities included arts and crafts, playing traditional musical instruments, planting and harvesting, fishing, cooking, and compost production. These activities were carefully selected and planned in order to maximize the value of knowledge and understanding that could be gained from local communities in Kuningan.
Additionally, at the end of every day, students and teachers gathered in order to reflect upon what they learned. This allowed everyone to share their thoughts and feelings about the activities and the newfound knowledge they gained on the journey and how it could be useful or important for them in the future.
Finally, there was also the added benefit that everyone on the trip was able to familiarize themselves with one another on a much deeper level. By seeing each other outside of school, both students and teachers are freed from classroom constraints. This trip allowed many students and teachers to casually interact with each other for the first time which helped build meaningful relationships between everyone who attended.
Despite all the fun, the week was of course indeed tiring for everyone involved. And on the 15th of September, the Year 11s and their supervisors returned to GJS to mark the end of WWW 2023-2024.
