On Thursday, 14 September, Year 2 went on a field trip to Kidzania! We got to experience many different roles that exist within our community. This was a chance for us to reinforce the learning from our unit under the theme “How We Organise Ourselves”, where we learned that people in a community work together to support each other. We chose which community helpers we wanted to be during our time at Kidzania, and we took on the responsibilities of those roles. We also learned that we all have the right to be fairly paid for our work, and we enjoyed earning KidZos. Collaborating with others, solving problems and inquiring into new things were all part of our day.
This month, Year 2 started exploring our second unit of inquiry: “The Choices People Make Impact Their Health and Wellbeing”. To tune into this unit, and learn important vocabulary, we broke down our central idea by focusing on 4 key words: choice, impact, health and wellbeing. Check out the different activities we had for each vocabulary word, and how our students developed an understanding of them.
Choice:
Inspired by the Korean tradition of doljabi (돌잡이), students were presented with a wide variety of items. Each of us chose an item, and then we predicted what that choice might tell us about that person. We began to understand that choices are very personal, and that they reflect who we are and who we want to be. We also discussed the concept of perspective, as people view choices differently depending on their prior experiences.
Impact:
Using a single sheet of paper, we examined the impact our actions can have on other things. We started out by talking to the paper, then touching it with one finger, then punching it, then stabbing it with a pencil. Each time, we discussed the impact of that action. We thought about things that might have a positive, neutral or negative impact.
Health:
Many of us already knew what it means to be healthy in general terms, but we used our time to explore how fitness and exercise can keep us healthy in different ways.
Wellbeing:
We learned that wellbeing, very simply, means being well. We began by exploring and identifying emotions. We then looked through a variety of mindfulness tools, including breathing boards. We shared our perspective on how we might feel before and after using these different tools.
