Hi everyone! In our last Year Level Meeting, the Year 7 students participated in a workshop on Diversity and Inclusion. The workshop was both sneaky and surprising! What was sneaky and surprising? Continue reading below to find out….
The year 7 students were divided into smaller groups and directed to complete the same activity. The task itself was quite simple: we had to create a card with a specific design and text. As the students began their group task, they were excitedly reading through the provided instructions and working together to complete the task. Each group were given their own bag of instructions, tools and materials.
As the activity progressed, some groups managed to complete the task so quickly that other groups began to say.. ‘Hmm.. that looks sus (suspicious)! There is no way that group has already finished what needed to be done!” That was when some of the students realized that each group were working towards a set of different instructions.
One group had to have one hand behind their backs, some groups didn’t have to cut a circle because the paper was prepared to be torn easily, some had scissors and some did not. Some groups had the instructions written in Spanish, and a group even had to have people close their eyes during the task! Watch in the video below as we shared what differences of tools, instructions, and experiences we had, and then were surprised to know that all our experiences were different from one another:
We then reflected together on how this experience applies in real life. The students reached the following conclusions:
When we are completing a task in school, the teacher gives us all the same task to do, but that doesn’t mean that we experience the same challenges.
We realize that some of us may have more challenges in understanding the instructions, some don’t have the same tools that do our work faster or easier, some have physical challenges, etc. Some of us asked for help from the other groups that had more tools, although many of us did not ask for help.
We realized that we need to be more aware of our surroundings to help out our friends that do not have the same advantages that we do.
