Dear Primary Parents,
We have successfully completed two months of school. Our students have demonstrated that they are resilient, flexible, and adaptable learners. Our teachers and wider staff have demonstrated empathy, deeper understanding and adaptability when working with our students. Together, we are lucky to have a strong team of educators and an adaptable group of learners.
The Primary Mid-semester Conference will be held on October 6th and 7th. During these conferences, students will have the opportunity to share their learning journey, explain their understanding and reflect on their goals and achievement. It is an event that needs to be celebrated. In preparation for these conferences, one really important habit that we as parents can build is to have quality conversations with our children about school. Quality conversations do not elicit a yes or no response.
Asking your child “What did you do today?” or “Did you have a good day?” will result in a single word or phrase response. Instead, try asking a question that is open-ended and thoughtful. We want our children to share their real emotions and feelings. Here are some ideas to try out.
● Tell me about the best part of your day.
● What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
● What did you need help with today? Who helped you?
● What is one thing you did today that helped a friend or your teacher?
● Who had a hard time in school today?
● Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
● What made you laugh today?
● Tell me about what you read in class.
● Who did you play with today? What did you play?
● Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?
● What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
● What rules are different at school than our rules at home?
● Who did you sit with at lunch?
● Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?
● When did you feel most proud of yourself today?
● Tell me one new thing you learned today.
Athletics Carnival
After almost two and half years, our students will be taking part in the Athletics Carnival on October 3 for Kindy and Reception and October 4 for Primary School. It will be a day full of fun and of immersing ourselves in active living. Students will represent their assigned house and compete against others. Parents are welcome to attend the event and cheer on the students.
Term Break and Professional Development Day
We will have our well-deserved term break from October 8 to October 16. On October 17, our teachers will engage in Professional Development. There will be no school for our students on Monday, October 17. Students will be welcomed back to campus on October 18.
Book Week
On October 31 - November 4, we will also be celebrating Book Week. The committee has lined up a week-long of fun and meaningful activities for all our students and teachers.
Holiday Bazaar
On December 16, a Holiday Bazaar will be held at GJS from 10.00 am-12:00 pm. We hope that parents, students, and teachers will bring homemade and hand-made merchandise to sell. Parents may purchase a table for 250,000. Teachers and students may purchase a table for 100,000. The revenue collected from table bookings will be used to support the work of the GJS Wellbeing Committee. Payment will be collected on the day of the Holiday Bazaar. Students who are selling items in order to raise money for charity may book a table for free. Each table is approximately 1 meter 60cm long by 1 meter 20 wide. We invite parents and small businesses to host a table and support this community initiative. Here is the LINK.
Long Term Service Awards
The success of an organization highly depends on its people. Similarly, the biggest asset of a school is its teachers. Last September 22, I had the pleasure of witnessing Yayasan Group recognize all its long term employees within its educational system. The categories were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. It is with pride and honor that we celebrate our teachers who have been serving our students, some for 30 years.
We have started to open up some of our spaces to allow students to engage in hands-on learning and student inquiry. Here are some of our students in action.
