For Earth, Wind & Fire, September is the time for celebrating free spirit. The song may be inspired by the end of the summertime and the spirit to embrace the new seasons. Whenever the refrain comes to “Baaa dee yaaa….” (“Earth, Wind & Fire – September Lyrics”), it would be hard not to move your shoulders to dance or to sing along.
However, for some people, September gives a tough life indeed. For Year 12 students, this month is not easy on them either. They face the reality of being in their final year, facing off site school assessments. They have worked on various deadlines from internal assessments to extended essays. In addition to these academic expectations, the students have to work on their final assembly too. “Wake Me Up When September Ends” (Bayer et al.) has been their earworm for the whole month.
As assessments and tasks pour like a rain, the students are having to actively practice time management, a skill that is needed for their life later in university. Knowing that they will be able to face these challenges in this moment should give them a sense of control and confidence that they are able to cope with adversity. All of these struggles will remind them that they have teachers who are willing to help, parents who support them and many friends that are ready to listen, encourage, and walk with them, no matter what. They will learn that whenever one door closes, another door will open. They will learn that there is always more than one possible solution to any problem. Students will learn that challenging times are stepping stones that prepare them for the life ahead.
Dear students, this too shall pass and you’ll know that you are stronger than who you think you are.
