UOI 1 Provocation Activity

As part of our first Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme of Where We Are in Place and Time, students began exploring the Central Idea: “Invention and innovation can improve people’s quality of life over time.”

To start our inquiry, students took part in an Invention or Innovation School Scavenger Hunt. They walked around the school, carefully observing their surroundings and looking for objects, tools, systems, or technologies that could be examples of inventions or innovations. They sketched what they found and explained their thinking about whether each was an example of an invention, an innovation, or something they were not yet sure about.

The students really enjoyed exploring the school in a different way. They were excited to discover that everyday objects and systems they normally use can also be connected to our Central Idea, which is: Invention and Innovation can improve people’s quality of life over time. They enjoyed discussing their ideas with their peers and explaining why they classified something as an invention or innovation.

The purpose of this provocation was not to simply find the correct answer. Instead, it encouraged students to observe, question, make connections, and develop their own perspectives.

This activity provided an engaging starting point for students to investigate why people invent and innovate.

Year 5 Participation in the Independence Day Upacara

On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Year 5 students took part in the Whole School Upacara as part of the school’s celebration of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.

As part of the Upacara, the students performed two meaningful Indonesian songs, “Rukun Sama Teman” and “Berkibarlah Benderaku.” Through their performance, the students shared messages of friendship, unity, and love for Indonesia with the whole school community.

The performance was not only about singing together, but also about learning the importance of working together, respecting others, and celebrating our diversity. Standing and singing together, the students experienced how music can bring people together and create a sense of belonging.

For Year 5, this celebration was a meaningful opportunity to show appreciation for Indonesia and to become an active part of the wider Global Jaya School community.

Guest Speaker Session

On Wednesday, September 2nd, 2026, as part of our current unit under the theme Where We Are in Place and Time, with a Central Idea of “Invention and innovation can improve people’s quality of life over time,” the Year 5 students welcomed guest speaker Pak Wildan Anwar (Letty’s dad). He shared how inventions and innovations are vital to his work in the logistics industry.

Pak Wildan introduced students to the basics of logistics, the process of transporting our daily necessities and everyday items from one place to another. He then eloquently connected his field to key inventions and innovations. The students learned who invented the container, which can be carried on truck, train, and boat; and they also learned how recent innovations, such as container scanning, allow inspections to take just seconds rather than hours.

The students asked deep, reflective, and thoughtful questions that demonstrated their genuine curiosity in what was being shared. The Year 5 team extends our sincerest gratitude to Pak Wildan for generously sharing his time and expertise with our learners.
