On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, our K1 students celebrated Indonesia’s Independence Day with great excitement. The children came to school dressed in red and white, the colors of the Indonesian flag.
During the celebration, the students created Indonesian flags and simple decorations using different art materials. They also participated in traditional games, including lomba makan kerupuk in the Shared Area, balap karung on the Big Playground, and memindahkan bola at the Primary Plaza. The activities filled the day with laughter, excitement, and cheerful encouragement.
Through these activities, the children learned more about Indonesian culture and the importance of celebrating together. It was a joyful and memorable day filled with creativity, confidence, and pride in Indonesia. Merdeka, Indonesia!
Big Feelings, Bigger Stories: K1 Explores Emotions Through Storybooks
There's nothing quite like watching a child's face light up when they recognize a feeling in a storybook character. The same flicker of joy, worry, or surprise they've felt themselves. This is exactly the kind of discovery our K1 students have been making as part of our Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves.
Over the past few weeks, our young learners have been diving into beloved storybook characters, playing detective as they studied facial expressions, actions, and experiences. Together, we asked big questions with small words: How is this character feeling? What made them feel that way? It's amazing how much emotional insight a four-year-old can offer once you ask the right question!
When Stories Come to Life
Reading is wonderful, but living a story is even better. So instead of stopping at the last page, we brought our favorite tales into the real world.
After meeting the speedy, mischievous Gingerbread Man, our kids rolled up their sleeves for a baking adventure; mixing, shaping, and (of course) taste-testing their very own gingerbread cookies.
Then, stepping into the shoes of Goldilocks, the children helped the teacher prepare and sample their own bowls of porridge, debating along the way whether it was too hot, too cold, or just right.
These playful, hands-on experiences did more than fill tummies, they helped our students connect storybook magic to real life, all while building creativity, communication skills, and emotional awareness.
What's Next for Our Little Storytellers
The adventure continues! Here's what's coming up on our K1 calendar:
🧚 Fairy Tale Day - September 9: Expect costumes, characters, and a whole lot of imagination as our classroom transforms into a world of fairy tales for the day.
🎁 Mystery Guest Sessions: Our much-loved tradition is back! Parents will pop into the classroom at scheduled times to surprise the children with a special story read-aloud, always a favorite moment for our little ones.
We're so grateful to be sharing these joyful, memorable reading experiences with our wonderful K1 community, and we can't wait to see what new stories, and new feelings we'll discover next.
