As part of their learning, Year 3 students had the opportunity to meet and interview guest speakers from different generations, including a teenager, a parent, a grandfather, and a young child. Each guest shared unique experiences that helped students understand that people have different perspectives, feelings, challenges, and ways of dealing with change.
Students prepared and asked questions about their guests’ daily lives, important relationships, things that make them happy, and how they respond to sadness, anger, conflicts, and challenges. They also explored how people change as they grow older and what they learn about themselves along the way.
The interviews provided students with an authentic opportunity to develop their communication and listening skills. They practised asking relevant questions, listening carefully, asking follow-up questions, and showing respect while others were speaking.
Through this experience, students strengthened their Communicator and Open-minded attributes by listening to different perspectives and learning from real-life experiences. Most importantly, they discovered that everyone has a unique story, and there is always something valuable to learn from others.
