On 11 November 2025, our Year 2 students proudly showcased their UOI 2 projects under the transdisciplinary theme How We Organize Ourselves where the students were exploring how communication systems foster collaboration across different communities.
In the days leading up to the Communication EXPO, the students engaged in a series of learning engagements designed to equip them with the understanding and skills needed for their final project.
We began by guiding students to identify real issues within their immediate environment, such as problems they noticed at home, in school, or in their community. From these observations, they were encouraged to think critically and select one issue they felt inspired to solve.
Once they had chosen an issue, students moved into the planning stage, where they conducted simple online research to gather relevant information. They explored how communication can support problem-solving, looked at examples of solutions created by others, and identified features that could strengthen their own ideas.
Using the information gathered, students then developed a prototype or designed a product to address the issue they had selected. This stage allowed them to apply creativity, test their ideas, and make necessary improvements based on feedback from friends and teachers.
After completing their prototypes, the students created informative posters to communicate their thinking process. These posters explained the function, value, and strengths of their product, helping them prepare to present confidently during the EXPO.
Throughout this learning journey, students demonstrated growth in expressing their ideas clearly during discussions, presenting their prototypes, and explaining how their solutions work. They also selected issues that mattered to their community and designed solutions intended to help others. At the end of their learning journey they evaluated their own work, considering feedback, and making improvements to ensure their product effectively addressed the problem.
This series of inquiries and hands-on experiences not only strengthened their understanding of communication systems but also nurtured essential 21st-century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and responsible decision-making.
