November was a very important month at Global Jaya School. We had the delight of holding Book Week events (Nov 1-5) and celebrating National Heroes Day (Nov 10)!
For Year 7, Book Week included an online “Meet the Author” event, during which Richard Sobol - a photojournalist and children’s author, took us on a journey to see some of only a few hundred mountain gorillas that are left in the world.
Mr. Sobol told us the story of his journey from the capital of Uganda, Kampala, through rural villages and into the dense forests with his guides. He told us this story through his award winning photography and shared messages of cooperation between humans and nature, as well as warnings about the extinction of some of our most beloved species in the world.
Throughout the week, during morning advisory, students shared their favorite books, stories they would like to read, and even some of their favorite animals (after the “Meet the Author” event).
To end Book Week, we also had a dress up day, during which some of our Year 7 students came to school in costume as one of their favorite fictional characters. One particular costume of note was Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games series!
The following week, we were lucky to have a whole school Upacara event hosted online to remember, respect, and celebrate Indonesia’s national heroes. The event included performances from students from many different year levels, and all of Year 7 tuned in to the live stream on YouTube, along with their classmates and advisor.
November has truly been a month of celebrations for our Year 7 students and some of the first major events they will have experienced as members of Secondary School. It has truly been a period that celebrates our national heritage and international-mindedness, the balance of which is so important to our school community.
We look forward to seeing Year 7 take part in more of our upcoming events this year and in future years too!
