For some people, music is just a sound that you hear while you are doing something. But for Syifa Aulia, a Year 11 student of GJS, she found “a home” through music.
Hi Syifa! I heard you were involved in a project with some great musicians lately.
Can you tell me about it?
I was collaborating with Erwin Gutawa and Ardhito Pramono in the “Masa-Masa” project. I find this project very special because I have always been a big fan of Ardhito Pramono. So, on a very bright and exciting note, I once told Ibu Ria, for her advisory morning prompt of “Biggest Dream”, that one of mine was collaborating with Ardhito Pramono, considering he is one of the reasons I’m here. So, this chance is like a dream come true!
Congratulations! “Masa-masa” is an old song, isn’t it?
Yes, This song was written by Erwin Gutawa & Harry Kiss and was actually quite popular in the 1980s. But I do like to explore old songs. There’s something about old songs that just sound so comforting and almost “home-y”, it feels warm. And I suppose because they all are just so very sincere, accurately depicting the condition of the time the song was written in. Few of my favourite genres that I’ve been exploring are Jazz, Bossa, and Keroncong.
Wow! That is so uncommon for the younger generation to enjoy Keroncong!
I suppose throughout my exploration of the many music genres, they were just the ones that stuck out to me the most, because they felt like home. They felt like something I could always rely on in any situation possible. There’s something about old songs that I can’t seem to find in the current generation. The sincerity, the love, and the feel that they have just all feel different.
Do you plan to pursue a career as a musician, Syifa?
1000000000% yes. I do plan to pursue a career in music, especially one in or around the world of Jazz. It’s now my main life goal to be a musician with music that can heal and comfort many souls, a goal I will always work towards, no matter the weather. I feel so strongly about music in healing souls, because I am one of the souls that have been healed by it. Music to me is like a form of therapy, like a friend I can always talk to about anything. I can write what seems like a love song, but is actually about something else, and I want to share to the world that everyone can do the same!
Do you have a vision about music, Syifa?
I want to promote the current generation of Indonesian youths, to showcase their talents to the world and show that arts is something anyone and everyone could play around with whether it’s for comfort or fun.
