The annual Book Week event was held on November 1-5, 2021, and the event was all held online. The theme of Book Week this year was Old Worlds, New Worlds, and Other Worlds. In the weeks leading up to Book Week, students excitedly participated in these competitions: Extreme Reading, Colouring, Drawing, Writing, Book Review, and Dress-Up day. Congratulations to all the winners!
This year we invited special Guest Speakers Puppetaria, Richard Sobol, and the twin sisters Maria and Elizabeth Rahajeng.
Tuesday (Nov 2) students from Kindy to Grade 2 enjoyed the puppet show by Puppetaria.
On Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 3 and 4), Richard Sobol engaged Year 7 to 9 students with his “Meet The Author” session. Richard Sobol talked about his books, his experience exploring various countries such as Uganda, in East Africa, and his interest in animal photography, especially elephants, whales, and gorillas. Students were excited, it felt like a virtual trip exploring the countries.
On Thursday (Nov. 4), Year 10 to 12 students enjoyed a Book Sharing Session by the twin sisters Maria and Elizabeth Rahajeng who co-wrote a book, “Being Unstoppable” inspired by their life experiences and journey to be among the successful Asian fashion icons today. Maria Rahajeng won Miss Indonesia 2014 and Elizabeth Rahajeng won the Tresemme competition that brought her covering New York Fashion Week for E! Asia. Their highest achievement is being the first Indonesian hosts for E! Asia. Without a doubt, they have worked so hard to realize their dreams and in the book they shared their struggle back in the school days and how they cope with the adversities. Some takeaways from their books they shared during the event:
When faced with well-being issues, you need to reach out for help and for those who would like to help, just listen.
Luck is opportunity meets preparation.
Take risks and challenge yourself. You would not know what works for you until you try and you don’t have to figure it all out now. Take your time and explore all possibilities.
We are really grateful to all our inspiring guest speakers who shared their experiences and their fantastic stories.
On Friday (Nov. 5), the closing event was dress-up day. Students, teachers, and staff participated and shared their love of characters and stories. Students came to school dressed up as their favorite fictional characters. It was a great joy to see participants dressed up in the book costume.
Thank you to all of the members of the GJS community for your support, participation, and efforts in making our Book Week event so enjoyable and fantastic.
