Book week is a very exciting time! We get to dress up as any character from a book! The fun part to me is the story telling session. Almost every year we get to see an author or a story teller, maybe even more. This year it was Richard Sobol!
Richard Sobol is a professional photographer that specializes in animal portraits. He is also an author who writes books about animals from the wild. The year 5s got the chance to meet him! Well not in real life of course but online. It was still a very good experience! He told us that he read a book about animals and he saw the pictures but behind them there were fences and a parking lot. He looked at the back of the page and it said that the pictures were taken in a zoo. That's why he became a photographer. We got the chance to see some of his photographs. One of them was twin elephants! It was the first ever twin elephant. He also showed us his pictures of monkeys, tigers, and lions. He narrated his story while showing his photographs to us. The photographs came to life at that time! He also showed a sneak peek of his new book!
In that session the most memorable time was when he gave us a sneak peek of his new book. That was a very memorable time because he showed us a different perspective of the pictures and the idea that he can make different stories with different perspectives. I also enjoyed when he showed us some of his photographs!
Presentations are very fun and important, but what could be better and more fun than a presentation? Ibu Hellena’s presentation about Research Skills! We learned a lot about research skills when Ibu Hellena presented. We even played a fun game to wrap it!
Ibu Hellena introduced us to Research Skills, to find trustworthy sources. She told us about Primary sources and Secondary sources. Websites are Secondary sources. Ibu Hellena is a teacher in GJS, she teaches secondary and sometimes primary. She told us things what Research Skills are and examples of a fake website. She shared information with us on how to identify fake websites. At the end, we even played a game that taught us a lot about Research Skills. The game that I mentioned was a bit like a quiz, we basically had questions and we had to answer them. If we answered correctly we could choose 3 chests that had different prizes in them. I really liked the presentation! Ibu Hellena delivered the information very well and in a fun way, too!
In the presentation, the time I liked most and I will probably always remember is when we played the game. It was very fun and useful because it helped us to review the information that we just learned.
During this pandemic, we have online and offline students. Online students are the ones who will have online school from home, offline students are the ones who will have school in the school building. When the offline students do assembly, they usually go to the shared area of grade 5 and do the assembly and see the performances.
It is very similar to doing everything online, except the students take turns going to school. They can’t all go to school because covid-19 still isn’t over yet. Once it is officially over, maybe all the students will go back to school again. But for now, we are just going to keep going in groups.
Usually, in our school assemblies, we perform with the whole grade and it’s usually a play of a story with a moral. It was a lot of fun because we were acting and had all the props and clothing and we got to talk to each other face-to-face without using the screen.
But ever since the lockdown started happening, things started to change. Instead, since we can’t do plays anymore; we do performances. It can be like dancing, singing, or anything like that. The assemblies we are currently having right now are basically for showing your different talents.
How the assembly works right now is that during school, the teachers ask students if they want to participate in the assembly so they can perform in front of year 5. They can choose from doing live performances or doing it in a video or a recording.
Teachers will also ask if they want to participate as an assembly organizer. There will be around 3 organizers from different year 5 classes (year 5A, B, and C). They will have different roles when the assembly starts, 1 person presents the slides and 2 people will be the MC’s.
The best thing about the assembly is that we get to see so many different talents from our friends!
Year 5 students have become scientists! As part of their 2nd Unit of Inquiry, Year 5 students used their understanding of simple machines and natural forces to attempt to solve a problem. They used the scientific method to research, plan, note materials and tools, build, observe, and reflect.
Students learned that scientists have to show commitment and that they never give up. Students also saw that scientists are inquirers who help change lives. Year 5 students will benefit from the experience of using their research skills now as a way of preparing for the challenge of Exhibition in Year 6.
