Last week the Year 6 class listened to a guest speaker named Pak Bruce. He is a park ranger for the National Park Service at Crater Lake National Park in the United States.
What did he talk about?
The ranger explained that:
He protects endangered fauna and flora in Crater Lake, such as the Mazama newt and Bull trout. Many fish species in Crater Lake have been threatened by crayfish.
He teaches people not to cut down trees carelessly, care about the environment, and use water sparingly.
He shared how rangers watch for forest fires and keep animals safe.
He told us about different kinds of animals that live in the forest.
What did I learn?
I learned that rangers are important for nature because they try to limit water waste, spread awareness about today’s environmental problems, and tell others not to cut down trees recklessly.
We must not throw trash in the forest, because it can harm species by creating a toxic environment.
Everyone should help take care of the environment, because it is our oxygen source and regulates the temperature.
My reflection:
I enjoyed listening to the ranger. His stories made me understand why we need to protect forests. I want to care more about nature in my daily life.
Upacara:
We did Upacara on Friday, August 15, in the gymnasium to celebrate our Independence Day, commemorate Independence Day, and remember the struggle of Indonesian heroes against colonialism. Students are gathered in the gym wearing uniforms, singing national anthems, praying for the national heroes, and listening to the proclamation text to respect our heroes who fought for independence.
Fun activities:
After the flag ceremonies and assembly, the more informal celebrations start with various games. We did a couple of fun activities to celebrate that day. This game is not competitive, so no one wins or loses. These activities aimed to celebrate Indonesian heroes' achievements and practice communication and collaboration.
Here are some of the games we played:
Moving sarong
Moving balls with a paper plate
Cracker eating contest
Moving marble with spoons in our mouths
Clothes and a moving balloon
Social Pot luck
Year 6 also had a social pot luck on that celebration. Everyone brought food from home to share. There were many kinds of dishes, snacks, and desserts. We ate together, shared stories about the food, and helped clean up. The activity was fun and made us feel closer as friends. Sharing food builds friendship and shows respect for each other. After that, we went out on the soccer field and played some more games like soccer and tag.
Our classroom got full of excitement as we began the first day of school. Together, we all welcomed the new students and spent time getting to know each other better. We did many activities to introduce ourselves and see the teachers. Some activities and discussions we did were: How to behave? (what we allow, what we ignore, what we stop, and what we reinforce), respectful communication, active participation, ownership of actions and learning.
After settling in and introducing our class agreements and to our friends. Day by day we met the specialist. For instance, Pak Hiskia ( Music), Ibu Primi ( Art ), Pak Alex & Pak Alwan ( PE ) and our religion teachers. Not long after the end of the week, Friday was here. We celebrated Indonesia’s Independence day, by upacara, fun games, and potluck. After all that the week has come to an end. All of us can't wait to continue our journey.
Why is Year 6 Special?
This year is special for Year 6. Because: PYP Exhibition, leadership opportunities, graduation, final year in Primary, school events (Kidpublish, sports day, field trips).
What’s New in Year 6?
Increased independence
More group work, collaboration, and project-based learning
More responsibility for your own learning and actions
Year 6 Expectations
Self-Management:
Teachers told some of the Year 6 expectations.
Students can only submit tasks on time; a deadline is a deadline, but making mistakes is still part of their learning as long as they do not repeat it. Students are also expected to have self-management skills, which means they must manage their own time and do their work on time. If the work is late, there is an exception: The parent writes a letter/email to the teacher explaining the emergency and why they still need to turn in their work.
Students are expected to be in the classroom by 7.30 am. A late mark will be added to the attendance if we enter the class after 7.40 am.
ICT - Information, Communication, and Technology
GJS is Google Suite Schools. Students are independent in using Google Classroom, email (using school account), Google Apps, and Google Sites (students' portfolios).
If they use social media, they must use it appropriately and responsibly, and the purpose of social media in school is communication.
They also have to bring their own devices from home. They can borrow it from the ICT department if they don't get it.
Integrity
Students must act with integrity and honesty and take responsibility for their actions and the consequences of those actions.
