Greetings
The year seven team are excited to welcome year seven students to their first year in Secondary. As facilitators and partners throughout the learning process this year, we look forward to collaborating with colleagues, parents and students to support student success. We believe that this collaboration can help the students to get to know the Secondary school environment and community in the first steps of their Secondary school life.
This move to Secondary school is an important milestone in a child’s life. Secondary students are expected to show increased independence, which can be a challenge for many of our students. In contrast to the previous level of education where almost all learning activities are carried out with the teacher in one classroom, in secondary school, students have to learn to change from classroom and classroom and teacher to teacher throughout their day. In addition to this change of structure, year seven students also have to adjust to a new curriculum, the Middle Years Programme.
To support with this transition, and with other day to day challenges, all year seven students are allocated an advisory teacher. The advisory teacher acts as a mentor and a facilitator in the student’s educational journey. Advisory teachers support organisation, skill building and self-advocacy in their day to day interactions with students. The advisory teacher also acts as a bridge between the student and the subject teacher where problem solving and collaboration needs to be supported.
As a reminder, the Year 7A students will be mentored by Mrs. Charlotte, who is also an English teacher, the Year 7B students will be tutored by Mrs. Agra, who is also a Science teacher, the Year 7C will be tutored by Mrs. Nia, who is a math teacher and the Year 7D will be guided by Mrs. Catherine who is also a Science teacher.
In addition to academic activities, the school also facilitates students to be creative and express their talents. Student activities at secondary school include sports, arts, science, as well as forms of student leadership which are facilitated and initiated by schools, teachers, students, and school organizations. Year 7 students can take part in these activities and be actively involved in collaborating and participating.
We look forward to collaborating this year in support of student success.
