One of the highlights in Year 6 is the PYP Exhibition. PYP Exhibition is the culmination activity in the PYP where Year 6 students inquire and explore topics that they are personally interested in and/or topics that are connected with their passions and interests. Due to the complexity, the PYP Exhibition lessons are run on a weekly basis, starting this August to December. January is fully allocated for the students to develop their personal inquiry project, which will then be showcased in February 2022.
One of the first activities of the Year 6 PYP Exhibition sessions exposed the students to the idea that doing something connected with their passion might significantly impact what they do later in life. The Year 6 team invited guest speakers to talk to students about how their passion affected their lives. One of the guest speakers invited was Kristina Dwi Suryani, a Global Jaya graduate who works as a product designer and owns a business that creates jewellery using recycled materials.
The following guest speaker was Pak Joe. We invited him to talk about his interests and passions and to share what his experiences have taught him about following your passions. We explored the journey of discovering your own passions, how passions evolve, and how you can use this to determine your life choices.
The next activity within the PYP Exhibition sessions involved identifying and exploring the possible topic ideas students would like to focus on for their personal inquiry. In this step, students were first asked to choose a topic of interest and were then grouped based on the similarity of their topics. Within their groups, they worked collaboratively to generate initial thoughts and suggested ideas to each other about the individual student’s topic of interest. After that, each student was given an opportunity to reflect on their chosen topic using the compass point reflecting tool.
