Creation of our Essential Agreement
We started our 2021-2022 school year with positivity and gratitude for all the great things in our GJS learning community. To ensure that our school year would be its most successful, we created a mutually agreed upon Essential Agreement. Year 3 worked together to choose agreements that were fair but essential to our continued success in our HBL learning environment.
Year 3 used their communication skills to choose and discuss why they thought some agreements were important. These discussions also clarified why we must sometimes be flexible because of scheduling and technology limitations.
In the end, both classes came to a mutually satisfying agreement on our choices. There were some differences between the classes, but each class made the choices best for them. The Essential Agreement is a great way to start a great school year.
Year 3 got the opportunity to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day together as a whole grade level. Some students were more familiar with the significance of this historical date, but all welcomed the chance to appreciate their host country's history better. Students also had a chance to celebrate Independence Day with their family.
This fun celebration started with a virtual raising flag ceremony. Students were also encouraged to sing the Indonesian National song and create poetry and artwork inspired by this event. To help understand this celebration, students got to play a fun Kahoot on Indonesian facts. Then students participated in a race to eat kerupuk.
In the end, everyone approached this celebration with interest and enthusiasm.

Year 3 had the privilege to reconnect with a vital member of the GJS learning community, Ibu Windy. Ibu Windy is our Primary Years Coordinator (PYP). She plays an essential role in all elements of the GJS educational curriculum.
Ibu Windy worked with the year three team to present a We Who Are themed exploration of our emotions and feelings. Students were encouraged to identify emotions that they see in facial expressions and movements in others. We also discussed how some uncomfortable questions could hurt other people's feelings.
Year 3 sincerely thanked Ibu Windy for her contribution to the continued success of the HBL learning environment.
