In UOI English, We made a Catapult. The Catapult Project was an initiative undertaken by the year 6 students. We were divided into pairs and given the freedom to choose our partners. The objective of this project was to design and construct a functioning catapult. While most groups opted for popsicle sticks, some utilized cardboard or wood for their constructions. Once all catapults were completed, we gathered in the MPH for a competition to determine which catapult could launch a marshmallow the farthest and with the greatest accuracy.
The purpose of this project was twofold. Firstly, it aimed to enhance our skills in design and construction. Through the process of conceptualizing and building a catapult, we gained practical insight into principles of physics such as force, motion, and trajectory. Careful consideration of angles and materials was essential to ensure optimal accuracy and distance in launching objects. Secondly, the project provided us with an opportunity to apply our knowledge and problem-solving abilities in a hands-on setting. Additionally, it fostered a spirit of competition, encouraging creativity and precision among participants.
Throughout the project, we actively engaged with several IB learner profiles. Reflection played a key role as we evaluated our catapults and brainstormed ways to enhance their performance. We demonstrated a willingness to take risks by bravely testing our creations, uncertain of their success. Furthermore, an open-minded approach was encouraged as pairs shared ideas and remained receptive to suggestions for innovation.
