Year 3 students were lucky to have Ibu Windy as a guest speaker on Tuesday, 5 March 2024. She shared her migration story as a child. Her father worked for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When she was nine, her father was assigned to the Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang, North Korea. The family spent almost two weeks traveling to their destination. They had to fly from Jakarta to Kuwait, Amsterdam, Moscow, and Pyongyang. She said living in one of the most isolated countries was unique but challenging. Her whole family had to adjust to the different customs, traditions, and boundaries from what they were familiar with. The family returned to Indonesia after her father completed his three years assignment. The journey home was shorter as they could fly via China. By that time, Indonesia had already opened its diplomatic connection with China.
When she was 12, her next move was to Warsaw, Poland. Once settling in Warsaw, her younger sister joined the International American school. Ibu Windy spent an entire year at home taking private piano, Polish, and French lessons when not looking for schools that suited her. Her parents even took her to schools in Prague, a neighboring country. After many eye-wakening discussions with her parents about her future, she joined a Polish-Mexican school. She thoroughly enjoyed her life in Warsaw. She loved learning about different cultures, experiencing other foods, and exploring European cities and countries whenever they had time.
After three years of living in Warsaw, the family returned to Jakarta. Ibu Windy said she needed to catch up academically even though she enjoyed the whole experience. She has been exposed to at least six languages and struggled to keep her formal Bahasa Indonesia. Luckily, her father was offered a position at Indonesia's National Cyber and Crypto Agency. Her father no longer had to be posted in countries for many years. He would only travel to a country for 30 days maximum before traveling to another country. The whole family could settle back in Jakarta and be able to support their kids' learning barriers.
After the Ibu Windy presentation, Year 3 students wrote a reflection about the guest speaker's presentation. It was a great experience for Year 3 listening to Ibu Windy’s fascinating story. Thank you so much, Ibu Windy, for sharing your migration story!
The culminating assessment for Unit 5 was a presentation about the student’s chosen historical figure. This historical figure had to be related to migration in some way. They could either do their presentation in the first-person perspective, the third-person perspective, or a mixture of the two. We then had a question/answer session when the presentation was finished, a peer feedback session where the students gave “compliment sandwiches,” and then the teacher gave feedback. Students choose historical figures like Christopher Colombus, Albert Einstein, Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, etc. In this way, students had the opportunity to learn about a wide array of different historical figures and were able to correlate what they learned to concepts we investigated regarding human migration and the reasons for it. There were some excellent presentations done that showed a good synthesis of information. They were also able to make connections between many different ideas and historical facts.
For the provocation activity for unit 6, Pak Rizka, Ibu Centi, Ibu Nadia, Ibu Primi, and Pak Nick all set up 5 different learning stations centered around different ways that humans can express themselves artistically. We had stations for poetry, photography, music, dance, and drawing. Students were exposed to different art forms, modes of expression, literary devices, and different ways to interpret artistic messaging. As the unit unfolds, we will look at things like metaphors, smilies, symbolism, and deeper meanings that artists convey. We will learn about the subjectivity of art, how it can be related to culture, and how to harness our imaginations. There will be a focus on perspective and how we can all have different interpretations of the same art piece.
