As part of our final week exploring How the World Works, Year 2 was able to engage in 2 culinary learning experiences. First, we learned how to make ice cream without a freezer. Using the properties of salt and ice, we were able to turn cream into soft serve ice cream. We observed that the salt and ice cooled the cream and caused it to solidify and change colour.
Do you want to try making your own ice cream? Try this recipe:
Add 250ml whipping cream to a small ziploc bag.
Add 15g icing sugar and a drop of vanilla essence to the small ziploc bag.
Seal the bag well (try to not leave too much air in the bag). Then shake and squish the bag carefully to mix.
Add 4 cups of ice to a big ziploc bag.
Add 500g rock salt to the big ziploc bag.
Put the small ziploc bag inside the big ziploc bag. Seal tight (try to not leave too much air in the bag).
Shake and squish the bag for 5-10 minutes. Take turns if you get tired. You should see the cream get thicker and lighter.
When the ice cream is ready, carefully open the big bag and pull out the little bag. Wipe the ice and salt off the little bag before opening.
Enjoy! Add your own favourite toppings.
We were also very lucky to have a guest speaker who came and taught us how to make chocolate tartlets. Ibu Dewi, Lala’s mom, explained and demonstrated the process for making the different elements of a chocolate tartlet, and we were able to observe lots of changes of matter, including dissolving, melting, evaporating and solidifying. It was a great example of how people use technology to change matter in their daily lives.
Together as a school, on Friday, 19 April, we celebrated the life of Ibu Kartini and the progress she made in ensuring all children have the right and opportunity to receive an education. We celebrated the day with a fashion show, followed by discussions in the classroom about Ibu Kartini and her work.
