In Our Own Words

In Our Own Words is a collection of poetry by all of the students in our English Language Learner program from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The students represent forty five different home languages and come from varying skill levels in English, from newcomers to advanced learners.

The students, tutors and teachers enjoyed learning about and writing many different styles of poetry. As a genre, poetry is included in all grade level expectations in the English Language Arts Curriculum Standards.

We would like to thank all of the students, tutors and teachers for their hard work on this project. In addition, we would like to thank the CT State Department of Education for funding this project through an Immigrant Children and Youth Grant.

Poems by English Language Learners, Glastonbury Public Schools, Glastonbury, CT, February 2009." Around the banner is the word "word" in languages from across the world.
