New Brunswick Middle School 8th Grade

Social Studies: Explorers, Native Americans, and New Worlds

How do people survive in a new world?

How do actors express point of view through tableaux and music?

Based on the teachers' curricular goals for their students, the teaching artist curated source material that focused on a pivotal moment in the history of European settlement, including characters with strong points of view. Each class used the source material, as well as supplemental material provided by the teachers, to inspire tableaux, dialogue and original music. Students engaged in active exploration and critical debate about the issues: Who should rule? How does slavery emerge from a partnership? And how is power taken and wielded? They also composed original music in English and Spanish to elevate their storytelling. At the final sharing, both the actors and audience performed with clarity, clear confidence, and respect for one another.

All: HOW CAN WE BELIEVE THEM?

El Intercambino Columbo

Los Nativos: EL MAR Y LAS MONTANAS

Y UN VOLCAN ARRIBA

TRABAJAMOS JUNTOS SIEMPRE

APROVECHEMOS NUESTRA VIDA

Los Exploradores: UN VIAJE LARGO POR EL MAR

TRES MESES SIN PARAR

EXTRANO MI GENTE Y MI HOGAR

ESPERO ALGUN DIA REGRESAR

The Mayflower Compact

Saints: OUR GOD IS STRONG, WE RUN ON FAITH!

ALL: IF WE BELIEVE, WE WILL SUCCEED

Strangers: OUR TOOLS AND HANDS ARE ALL WE NEED

ALL: IF WE BELIEVE, WE WILL SUCCEED

Saint: We want to rule the new world because we want to follow God’s rules and praise him the way he wants us to!

Stranger: We should rule because we kept this ship from sinking! You would be dead if it weren’t for us!

"The 8th graders had so much to say about the issues at hand. Much of our dialogue used in the sharing was devised in debate and passionate discussion."

"I learned that acting is really fun if you try it. It’s a way to express yourself with movement and words to tell a story. You get to forget about your own frustrating everyday emotions and get in the shoes of others."
