Students entering Grade 8 will have an opportunity to sample “mini courses” in a mosaic rotation of electives. Students will progress through multiple courses as listed below. Not all students will sample every course available in the rotations, and courses in the rotations may change from year to year; however, they will be able to experience a broad range of these courses in the areas of Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST), Arts Education (AED), and Career Education (CED).
COMPUTERS 8

This course will introduce you to a variety of topics in modern computing including computer programming, 3D modeling/animation, digital citizenship and internet safety. You will complete a variety of projects to develop skills and tools in each of these areas. This course will prepare you to be successful in future computer programs at Sa-Hali Secondary School.
DIGITAL LITERACY 8
MADDL008
Digital Literacy 8 is part of the Applied Design Skills and Technology curriculum and focuses on teaching students digital citizenship skills. This five-week course investigates the creation of digital footprints, the impacts of sharing online, creative control and copyright laws, email and online scams, and cyberbullying and harassment. Students also learn how to evaluate the quality of information online and how to do research effectively and efficiently. The course is geared to provide students with the tools and information necessary to make safe and smart choices online.
FOODS STUDIES 8
MADFS--08
Foods Studies 8 is a practical course where students learn about kitchen safety, food safety and measurement. The food preparation skills they learn will help students throughout their lifetime. Students will be able to make a variety of foods such as vegetable soup, apple crisp and pizza, that they will enjoy.
MADM-08
This project-based course provides an introduction to metalworking tools and processes in a safe environment. Students will learn about the safe and proper use of hand tools and machines and have an opportunity to develop their individual skills by designing and building projects of their own choosing.
MADT-08
This course is designed for students who would like to learn how to sew. Students will learn both hand stitching and sewing machine techniques. Students will create projects such as a pin cushion, stuffies and boxer shorts.
MADW-08
This course is intended for students who enjoy the craft of woodwork. Both the creative and technical aspects of woodwork will be explored. Students will be allowed to work on projects independently or in small groups. Safety, creativity and the development of self-confidence will be emphasized through project construction using power tools.
DRAMA 8
MDR--08
Mosaic Drama 8 at Sa-Hali Secondary has been designed with life skills and core competencies in mind so that all students can benefit from taking this course. Students will learn and practice elements of leadership, conflict management, and collaboration while also building their confidence for public presentation. Students who have no further interest in Drama will still benefit from the skills taught here, while students who want to be part of the Theatre Sa-Hali program will build fundamental theatre skills such as acting, directing, designing, and managing.

This 4-week introductory guitar course for Grade 8 students introduces the basics of playing acoustic or electric guitar in a fun and supportive setting. Students will learn essential skills such as proper posture, tuning, basic chords, simple strumming patterns, and reading chord diagrams or tablature. Each week builds on the last, moving from single-note melodies to simple songs and group performances. The course emphasizes developing rhythm, coordination, and musical confidence while encouraging creativity and collaboration through short ensemble pieces or class jam sessions.

Students may choose to take Band 8 where they will be in band for one semester. The second semester students will then take 3 other elective courses.
This inclusive choir course is open to students of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned singers. Through group rehearsals and performances, students develop vocal technique, musicianship, and confidence while exploring a diverse range of musical styles and cultures. Learning is grounded in the BC Arts Education Big Ideas, emphasizing creative expression, collaboration, and personal and cultural identity through music. Students engage in singing, listening, reflecting, and performing, building skills in pitch, rhythm, harmony, and ensemble awareness. No prior choir experience is required, and all students are supported to grow as expressive and responsible musicians.

Students may choose to take Band 8 where they will be in band for one semester. The second semester students will then take 3 other elective courses.
This beginner band course provides Grade 8 students with an introduction to music and a more in-depth opportunity to learn a band instrument. Unlike the 4-week mosaic rotation, students in Beginner Band will remain in this elective for the entire semester, allowing for consistent skill development and musical growth. Throughout the course, students will choose and learn to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument, focusing on proper assembly, posture, tone production, and basic music reading. They will build fundamental musicianship skills, including rhythm, note recognition, breath control, and ensemble awareness.

In this mosaic course, students will lay the groundwork for Career Education 10, a course required for graduation, through tasks involving self-assessment, goal setting, and research. They will begin to understand that careers do not just happen, but are a result of planning, perseverance, decisions, and both internal and external influences. In investigating the question "Who am I?", students will embark on an exploration of self to better equip themselves with the tools necessary to make informed and healthy decisions that will impact their future.
