There are many opportunities that colleges, universities and industry makes available to high school students in the summer as well as during the school year. Many of these give students the opportunity to have a college-like experience in high school and get a taste of what research and practice in a particular field might be like before they are in college. Some are free though most have some manner of tuition associated with them. Some of those do have scholarships availible.
- Students who will be Juniors or Seniors in the fall can attend WPI Frontiers this July 8-20 (2007) for a residential, project based program in: robotics, physics, aerospace engineering, computer science, biology and biotechnology, electrical and computer engineering, interactive media and game development, mechanical engineering, chemistry and mathematics. There are also sundry social activities, field trips. Students pick a sci/eng major and also choose a communications/humanities & arts workshop. Tuition is $2100. FIRST participants can apply for a $500 scholarship (see me for info). Applications for both the 2007 program and the scholarship are due postmarked by May 31.
- Students who will be freshmen or sophomores can attend WPI Launch which is a week long course from 7/30 - 8/3, 2007. It's a day program (9-4:30) where students choose a biology, chemistry, computer science or robotics track. Tuition is $495. Registration for 2007 ends July 15th.
- UMass Lowell's College of Engineering sponsors Designcamp, a collection of programs for students who were in grades 5-11 during the prior school year. 2007's sessions include "Electronic Bling" and "Electronics and Music" for 8th-10th graders (1 week each, $380 registration due June 22, 2007), and "DC High Tech Product Design" and "DC High Tech Electronics" (2 weeks each, $600 registration due April 16, 2007) New! 6/12/2007

- It's open to current 9-12th graders. Registration is due by Septermber 28th 2007 and requires a $12/student fee. Student participants must be accompanied by a parent or counselor. I have additional information in my room. New!9/5/2007
- As part of the F.I.R.S.T. outreach program, FIRST Place, Karen Sullivan coordinates the annual Women in Science and Technology Forum, next scheduled for November 2nd 2007 at both FIRST Place and UNH, Manchester. Karen writes:
- The Forum is an excellent opportunity for high school girls to hear about possible careers, meet mentors, find out what college is really like from current female students, and learn more about opportunities available to them in a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, and math fields. We anticipate about 300 attendees this year and nearly 50 professional women presenting.
