By the end of this unit, a successful student will be able to:
- Describe the components of the electromagnetic spectrum (MCAS ESS 1.2)
- (3.4, 4.1) Describe the nature of the continuous, emission and absorption spectrum that indicates the composition of stars (MCAS ESS 1.4)
- (3.4) Explain what is meant by the term "blackbody radiation" and describe the basic properties of such radiation including but not limited to:
- how peak color relates to the temperature (Wien's law)
- how energy& intensity relates to temperature (Stephan's law)
- (3.5) Describe what the Doppler Effect is and how and in what directions or towards what colors it causes wavelengths and frequencies to shift depending on how the source moves relative to the observer.
- (3.5 and notes) Explain the Big Bang Theory and discuss the evidence that supports it (background radiation, and Relativistic Doppler Effect- red shift) (MCAS ESS 4.1)
- (4.2) Describe the electromagnetic spectrum in terms of wavelength, frequency and energy (Planck's law)(MCAS Chem 2.6)
- (4.2) Understand that matter and light have properties of both particles and waves. (Planck's law, Photoelectric effect, Uncertainty principle) (MCAS Chem 2.4)
- (4.2) Using Bohr's model of the atom, interpret changes (emission/absorption) in electron energies in the hydrogen atom corresponding to emission transitions between quantum levels. (MCAS Chem 2.5)
- (4.3) Describe the additional changes in energy that can give rise to absorption or emission spectra in molecules
- (4.4) Identify what information can be determined from line spectra through knowledge of blackbody radiation and the Doppler effect and explain how that information can be determined.
- (4.4) Identify additional sources for line broadening beyond the Doppler effect
