By the end of this unit a successful student should be able to:
- Understand that electricity and magnetism are two aspects of a single electromagnetic force. Moving electric charges produce magnetic forces
- Explain how the experiments of Ørsted and Ampère first demonstrated this.
- Describe what is meant by the magnetic field, by north and south magnetic poles and how those poles relate to the Earth.
- Describe the force exerted by a magnetic field on moving charges and use that relationship to solve problems (20-4)
- Describe the force exerted by a magnetic field on current carrying wires and use that relationship to solve problems (20-6)
- Determine the magnetic field from a long current carrying wire (20-5) and solenoids using Ampère’s Law (20-8)
- Determine the forces of and between long current carrying wires (20-3)
- Explain how the magnetic fields of the Earth and Sun are produced
- Define the Curie temperature of ferromagnetic materials and explain how the paleomagnetic record demonstrates the motion of tectonic plates
