Medical Pre-Adopt

Purpose: Dogs and cats are eligible for the Medical Pre-Adopt (formerly known as foster to adopt) Program when they have found their adopters, but still have medical treatments or spay/neuter surgeries that need to be completed at GPG's expense. This enables the adopter to take custody of the pet so they can live in their forever home while any pre-existing medical issues or other procedures can be completed. During this time, GPG will pay for all medical treatments related to the pre-existing medical issue. The adopter is responsible for providing the monthly preventatives flea/tick preventatives as well as the monthly heartworm preventatives (dogs only) unless the dog was heartworm positive at the time of adoption and is going through heartworm treatment through GPG, then we will provide the monthly heartworm preventatives until the dog has tested negative for heartworms.

The Program Director will be the primary point of contact for Medical Pre-Adopt and can be reached at alisha@gatewaypets.org. Fosters- it is essential that you are reviewing the dates for future scheduled appointments with adopters at the time you are handing off your foster pet. Please encourage adopters to enter appointments into their calendar while you are reviewing the information. The adopters are excited and there is a lot of information and we don't want them to forget or miss these appointments.

Process:

  1. If a foster thinks his dog or cat is eligible for the medical program, then the foster should contact the Program Director at alisha@gatewaypets.org to verify eligibility.

  2. Once eligibility is confirmed, the Program Director will updated ShelterLuv with necessary medical information to ensure adoption contract includes information about medical treatments GPG will be paying for.

  3. The foster should email the Program Director (alisha@gatewaypets.org) the following information:

          • Name of the dog or cat.

          • Name of the adopter.

          • Date the dog or cat will move to its new home.

          • List of all medical issues and treatments, including vaccinations, that need to be completed prior to adoption and their target or scheduled appointment dates/times.

  4. The foster should complete the standard adoption process for any animal moving to the Medical Pre-Adopt program. Pets going on Medical Pre-Adopt are eligible for the 7 day adoption guarantee (formerly known as adoption trial). This includes requesting the electronic adoption contract from adoptioncontracts@gatewaypets.org and having the adopter sign the electronic adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee at the time that the adopter is taking custody of the pet.
