Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the following check-out guidelines were established by Gaston County Schools Library Media Coordinators.
Students can check out a maximum of TWO (2) books at any one time. If the student has overdue books, every effort must be made to return the book(s) or make payment for the material(s) before other books are check-out. Books are expensive; the average cost of one book is between $25. GCS currently has over 9,000 books checked out. If you do the math.... We simply can't replace these materials.
Students have access to books through the classroom collections purchased in recent years and also through the WOW card from the public library. Digital resources are also available through Destiny, MackinVia, and NCWiseOwl accounts. Please see Ms. Jordan on how to use these accounts.
LC hours are also different - they follow school hours 8 am to 3:30 pm.
The Wildcat Learning Commons at North Gaston High School
The North Gaston Learning Commons is open from 7:45 am until 3:30 pm each school day. Students are invited to use the resources of the center for research and reference, to select books, to read, and/or to study. The media staff encourages all students to familiarize themselves with the policies and resources of the commons, and to ask for assistance whenever needed. The media staff strives to maintain an atmosphere conducive to study and research. Food and/or drinks are not allowed and reasonable noise levels must be observed.
Learning Commons Policies and Procedures
A student must have a signed or official hall pass to the Learning Commons by one of his/her subject teachers in order to enter during the following times:
Upon arrival, students should leave their passes at the Circulation Desk and sign in on the website provided. Students are expected to spend their time in the Learning Commons working quietly on assignments or projects. Students who are not working and who are disturbing others will be asked to leave, and the teacher will be notified. When leaving the Learning Commons to return to class, students should sign out and obtain a media staff signature on the permit.
A hall pass is not required during the following times:
Use of Media Resources
All books, with the exception of the reference and reserve collection, are checked out on a two-week (10 school days) loan period. Reference, reserve, and non-print items are available on an overnight (next school day) loan period only. There is a limit of 5 items that may be checked out. Periodicals must be used in the Learning Commons. Items may be renewed for an additional two-week period.
Overdue Fines:
▪ Students who have overdue materials may not check out additional materials until overdue items have been returned and all fines paid.
▪ On two-week loan books, a fine of $.10 per day (excluding weekends and student holidays) per item will be charged.
▪ On overnight loan materials, a fine of $.25 per day (excluding weekends and student holidays) per item will be charged.
▪ The maximum fine amount to be charged is $5 per item.
▪ All Learning Commons fines must be cleared by the end of the year. Any students who do not clear their fines and/or return their materials may not receive their report cards by mail at the end of the year.
▪ Seniors must have all fines cleared and/or books returned before graduation practice in order to participate in graduation ceremonies
Printing Fees
Printing is $.10 per page (double-sided is still only $.10 per sheet). Color prints, if and when available will be $.25 per page/per side (so $.50 double sided). This is to help offset the cost of color toner.
Printing fines are not charged when a teacher is present and asks student to print out what they are working with.
