1. topic development - to narrow or broaden a topic for the purposes of research to a manageable size, so that just enough information can be found a the research project
2. task definition - used in the Big6 research model as the first step in the research process; define the problem and identify the information you need to solve the problem. What are you being asked to do? What types of information do you need?
3. information seeking strategies - used in the Big6 research model as the second step in the research process; Determine possible sources, evaluate those possibilities. What keywords will you use to search? What are possible sources? What are the best sources?
4. location and access - used in the Big6 research model as the third step in the research process; locate sources, ffind the information. Where will you find sources? Where in the sources can you find information?
5. use of information - used in the Big6 research model as the fourth step in the research process; engage in the information, extract relevant information. How can you best use the sources? What information in each source is useful?
6. synthesis - used in the Big6 research model as the fifth step in the research process; organize and present the information from multiple sources. How can you organize the information from various sources and present the result to others?
7. reflection - used in the Big6 research model as the sixth and final step in the research process; Judge the product and process. Is the task complete? How could you do things better to improve this information problem? How could you do it differently or better in the future. (Please note, the Big6 steps are not chronological - you may jump from step to step back and forth as you complete the process - running into issues that require you to "go back" to a prior step.)
8. database - a comprehensive collection of related data organized for convenient access
9. keywords - a list of words or short phrases used in a search engine or for research
10. citation/attribution - the act of citing or quoting a reference to an authority
