Our framework for understanding our Mission for Peace and Sustainability is based primarily on the five pledges of the UN's Agenda for Sustainable Development launched with the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. These pledges show that Sustainable Development is focused on achieving universal human well-being while recognising that this is inextricably dependent on maintaining the Planet's natural life support systems (hence our preferred definition, Wellbeing for all within the means of Nature). We have this arranged this site around these 5 pledges.
We strongly endorse the UN's view that the better world that we aspire to create in our UWCSEA Goal is only achievable if these 5 pledges are addressed in an integrated way. Given our UWC mission we would also embrace the UN's belief that "There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development". Peace is one of the UN's five pledges of the Sustainable Development Agenda and hence you will find links to our work on Peace building on these pages as well.
As we develop and share our own understanding at UWCSEA you will also find us increasingly speaking about Sustainable Development using these concepts and put into practice through an integrated approach.
We use both the pledges and the goals as 'tools' to help us analyse and plan action for sustainable development. This short clip shows students exploring the web of links between the goals.
