A focus on Sustainable Development at UWCSEA derives from the United World College mission to "make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future". There is not yet a uniform or formally agreed approach to education for sustainable development within the movement as the individual colleges are deliberately diverse and free to follow different education curricula and operational models as long as these follow the guiding principles, one of which is that "Students should be able to take positive action around issues of sustainability on both an institutional and individual level". Explore the movement's website above to find stories of how each college embodies this mission.
The tension between unifying around a common approach to maximise our global leverage and the desire to cultivate the diversity of thinking and responses will likely always exist, but given the growth and development of our movement a lot more discussion is taking place about how to balance this tension.
