Programme Content:

Most public speaking programmes teach students how to speak.

The Idea Room begins by teaching students what to say.

Designed specifically for UWCSEA students, this year-long programme develops confident communicators by helping students discover their own ideas, organise their thinking, and express themselves with clarity and conviction. Through a drama-based approach, students learn not only to present confidently, but also to think critically, listen actively, and respond authentically.

Students are challenged to move beyond memorised speeches and rehearsed answers. Instead, they learn how to develop genuine viewpoints, adapt their communication to different audiences, structure persuasive presentations, and engage confidently in discussion and debate.

Across four seasons of learning, students progressively explore:

1. • Finding and expressing their own ideas

   • Understanding and adapting to different audiences

   • Structuring messages that others can follow

   • Speaking with confidence under real-world conditions

The programme combines active drama techniques with practical communication training, helping students develop:

1. • Presence and confidence

   • Clear vocal communication

   • Audience awareness

   • Critical thinking

   • Persuasive speaking

   • Question-and-answer skills

   • Leadership communication

Parents will have opportunities to observe their child's growth through sharing sessions that showcase not only speaking skills, but the development of independent thought and authentic self-expression.

1. • Students who complete the Foundation Band One pathway may progress to the advanced Application Band Two Module, where they learn to defend ideas, engage with differing viewpoints, respond to challenging questions, and present on larger public platforms.

   • Students will be provided a supportive environment for them to discover their voice and learn how to use it effectively.
