TIMELINE FOR UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR VISITS
If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you’ve got. ~ Lee Iacocca
TENTATIVE TIMELINE FOR UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR VISITS
Please note the following regarding this tentative timeline:
Student Teachers will follow the same school calendar as the host school, not the WKU academic calendar. For example, student teachers first day of student teaching is on the first day of public school in the fall which is much earlier than WKU's first day of classes. Spring semester students start in early January when school districts resume.
The designated weekly structure in this timeline may vary slightly depending on how the 70 instructional days fall on the school calendar.
Schedules will be altered for those students who are studying abroad through International Student Teaching. Those student teachers complete 11-12 weeks instead of 16 weeks. The University Supervisor and Student Teaching Seminar instructor will adapt this schedule to allow successful completion of the student teaching experience, for these students.
When the student teacher is ready to begin taking over some of the teaching, usually during the second week, she/he should start with only one class or group. Classes or lessons are then added (one each week is suggested) until the student teacher is teaching all of the classes of the mentor teacher.
Near the end of the student teaching period, the student teacher should be relieved of all or nearly all teaching responsibilities to allow time for additional learning opportunities. Student Teachers are required to complete 6 outside observations (3 per 8-week placement or 6 for the 16-week placements).
The student teacher must attend all seminars scheduled by the Office of Professional Educator Services and EDU 489 Teacher Work Sample instructors.
Starting Fall 2022, student teachers are allowed 3 absences. All other days are made up at the end of the semester. Also, starting in Fall 2022, PD and other instructional learning days will count as part of the total days that a student teacher is in assigned to a school. See the Attendance/Calendar section of this website for specific dates for each district.
