STUDENT TEACHERS USING SOCIAL MEDIA
WKU student teachers shall follow the school district policy regarding photographing and videotaping students. Therefore, before photographing/recording any student or staff member of that school, the WKU student teacher should gain permission from the mentor teacher/administrator of that school.
If allowed by a school district to post any of their students on social media, it should be of instructional activities and only on a WKU student teacher's professional social media account. WKU recommends that any sharing on professional social media accounts be done without revealing the identity/face of the students, even if allowed by the school district.
Hiring schools will check all social media accounts as they decide who to invite to interview.
Be sure your personal account privacy settings are turned on and working.
It is also wise to create a professional Twitter and professional Instagram account.
These professional accounts will help you celebrate your students. Be sure to always get all parents and the school's permission before posting.
These accounts also are great ways to showcase and market your strengths as an educator to future employers. These hiring officials will note that you are using social media in a positive way to not only celebrate students, but to learn from and network with other educators. Many principals and teachers will look at who you are following on a professional account.
Tag @WKUmartin and @WKUSTE when you post on professional accounts. This will help WKU promote you with possible hiring school districts too.
Most school districts in this regional area use Twitter to communicate with parents via social media. However, many also have school Instagram and Facebook pages.
Always follow any school district and/or schools you wish to be hired in. Again, it is a smart marketing tool and great way for you to learn more about these schools.
