PBIS is one of the programs used under a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) approach to meet students at their current academic, social and behavioral needs. PBIS has three levels of support:
Tier I is the support of positive behaviors and supports which include the teaching of school-wide behavioral expectations. It consists of rules, routines and the development of social skills which will guide students through adverse social situations. Tier I is used for all students.
Tier II supports are established for students who demonstrate the need for more behavioral support. Such supports may include a mentoring program, behavior contract, support from the school counselor, structure recess/passing periods, and social skills lessons. Approximately 15% of all students require the support of Tier II programs.
Tier III programs serve approximately 5% of the student population. These supports vary, but include home/school collaboration and may include mental- and health- care professionals.
In short, PBIS calls on schools to teach students what positive behavior looks like, and provides support when the student struggles to maintain positive behavior. According to several studies, PBIS leads to better student behavior. In many schools that use PBIS, students receive fewer detentions and suspensions, and get better grades.
