Medication at School
State law requires that parents/guardians notify the school when their child is taking any medication while at school whether it is over the counter, prescribed, given as needed, or on a regular basis.
For the school to provide medication during school hours, the “Physician Authorization Medication Form” must be completed and signed by the physician and parent. The district form is preferred, however, some physicians choose to use their own forms; this is acceptable if it contains instructions from the physician detailing the medication, times to be taken, route of administration, and dosage, along with any special instructions and direct contact information.
All medications are to be stored in the health office. Students are not permitted to have any medication or syringes on campus; have it in their backpack or locker. This includes all over-the- counter medications such as Aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, allergy and cold remedies, including cough drops. All unauthorized medications will be confiscated.
MVUSD is not permitted to store or administer CBD oil at school; however, should your child require it, please make arrangements with your school principal and health office; parents/guardians, or individuals they assign, may arrange to come and administer the oil during the school day. (EC 49480 and 49423)
Students on a traditional Middle and High School campuses in grade 6-12, who require a rescue inhaler and/or Epinephrine Auto-Injector are urged to carry and self-administer their inhaler and/or Epinephrine auto-injector at school; provided they have been instructed in the proper use by their physician. As with all medication at school, the “Physician Authorization Medication Form” along with “Self-Carry and Administered” section (page two) must be completed by their physician and signed by the student and their parent.
A new form must be completed each new school year (not calendar year); and for any changes such as dosage and/or frequency of administration, or specific physician instructions. (EC 49423, 49423.1, 48900)
