STUDENT SERVICES and PBIS TEAM
What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
(PBIS)?
PBIS is one of the programs used under a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) approach to meet students at their current academic, social and behavioral needs. PBIS has three levels of support:
Tier I is the support of positive behaviors and supports which include the teaching of school-wide behavioral expectations. It consists of rules, routines and the development of social skills which will guide students through adverse social situations. Tier I is used for all students.
Tier II supports are established for students who demonstrate the need for more behavioral support. Such supports may include a mentoring program, behavior contract, support from the school counselor, structure recess/passing periods, and social skills lessons. Approximately 15% of all students require the support of Tier II programs.
Tier III programs serve approximately 5% of the student population. These supports vary, but include home/school collaboration and may include mental- and health- care professionals.
In short, PBIS calls on schools to teach students what positive behavior looks like, and provides support when the student struggles to maintain positive behavior. According to several studies, PBIS leads to better student behavior. In many schools that use PBIS, students receive fewer detentions and suspensions, and get better grades.

Positive Behavioral Supports for Home
The Moreno Valley Unified School District's Student Services department is committed to supporting our families with Social and Emotional as well as Behavioral Supports at home. We understand that these times can cause stress and anxiety for our students and their families and we want to continue to provide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). You can help your child make positive choices by creating expectations at home. These expectations will help you set the tone for a positive learning experience in the home. Our friends at the Centers for PBIS and Parent Information and Resources offer a wonderful resource to support parents in their efforts to create a safe, respectful and responsible learning environment in the home. Please click here to access their book.
As we face this pandemic, it is important to remember that our students may begin to feel anxiety. To help your student deal with this anxiety, it is important to have age-appropriate conversations with them. For resources and information on how to hold those conversations, click here.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness, or Mindful Moments, provide us with the opportunity to slow down and focus on mental well-being. Activities such as Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation and coloring support us in refocusing in an effort to promote self-care. There are many videos you can find to guide you through these activities.
