Week 10 Unit 1 Lesson 8: Joining In 10/12/20
Lesson 8: Joining In
Why This Lesson Matters
Elementary students often play in groups, but joining a group can be a difficult skill to master. It combines the skills of assertiveness, showing respect, and initiating conversation. Children are more likely to succeed in joining a group if they show interest in the group’s activity by watching, listening, and asking questions. Asking questions and making positive comments (or giving compliments) enable a child to understand and “fit in” better to a group activity.
It is also important to encourage caring responses toward children who want to join in. Attempts to join in may fail if group members do not show compassion for the excluded student.
