As educators, we constantly monitor student progress—academically, behaviorally, and emotionally. Sometimes, even with Tier 1 supports in place, a student continues to struggle. Knowing when to bring in the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) team helps ensure every student gets the right help at the right time.
Below are three common red flags that may signal it’s time for additional support:
📘 Academic Concerns
If a student consistently shows difficulty completing assignments—even after you’ve implemented Tier 1 strategies like extended time, chunking, or small group support—it may be time for a deeper look.
Look for patterns, such as:
Frequent missing or incomplete work
Struggles to retain or apply skills despite re-teaching
Low or inconsistent assessment performance
Next Step: Document the Tier 1 interventions you’ve tried and their outcomes. Fill out the MTSS Intervention Form.
💬 Emotional or Behavioral Concerns
Some students become withdrawn or disengaged, showing emotional red flags rather than academic ones. You might notice:
Minimal interaction with peers or staff
Flat affect or loss of interest in class activities
Noticeable change in mood or participation compared to earlier in the year
🟩 Next Step: Reach out to the student's counselor, especially if you’ve already tried Tier 1 supports like positive check-ins or relationship-building. If the student is in crisis, go immediately to the counselor and do NOT send an email.
📅 Attendance Concerns
Attendance patterns can reveal a lot. If a student is missing more days than the average student, it’s important to take note before it becomes chronic.
Warning signs include:
Frequent absences or tardiness
Sporadic attendance patterns
Repeated excuses or unexplained absences

🧠 Remember:
MTSS isn’t about labeling—it’s about layering support. When Tier 1 strategies aren’t enough, early collaboration with the MTSS team ensures that no student falls through the cracks.
