Why:
Resetting classroom expectations at the end of the quarter is important because it allows both students and teachers to reflect, reset, and refocus. It sets the tone for continued growth, builds a more structured environment, and enhances motivation by giving students clear, attainable goals.
How:
1. Reinforce Classroom Norms and Routines
Why: Students benefit from clear structure and reminders of routines, especially as they transition between quarters. Reinforcing established norms (like participation rules, homework expectations, or class behavior standards) provides clarity and sets the tone for the next phase.
Action: Have a class discussion or post the expectations again, framing them as a team effort to maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
2. Promote a Growth Mindset
Why: Encouraging students to view challenges as opportunities for growth fosters resilience and perseverance. It helps students realize that setbacks from the previous quarter can be valuable learning experiences.
Action: Share examples of how challenges lead to growth, and invite students to reflect on areas they struggled with and how they can improve. This sets the expectation that progress is ongoing and achievable.
3. Set New Goals for the Upcoming Quarter
Why: Giving students a fresh start with clearly defined academic and behavioral goals motivates them to focus on improvement. It helps reset expectations in a positive way, allowing them to build on past achievements or address weaknesses.
Action: Guide students through a goal-setting activity where they define personal academic or behavioral objectives. Revisit these goals periodically to track progress and adjust expectations as needed.
