Goal: Experiment with using text in a composition using any medium or a combination of mediums. You can create contour drawings on top of a surface (text, maps, etc.), experiment with combining painting and drawing together, draw or painting back into a watercolor, etc.
Process: There are a couple of ways that you can go about this. You can impose text onto the image and then shoot the photograph, it can be text in the natural environment, or you can take an image and manipulate it by hand after, or digitally.
No matter how you choose to use text in the photograph, you must think about the content, or message of the piece and the composition. You do not want to text to look like it was stuck on, but rather a natural part of the image. Typography should serve as an enhancer to the image and not dominate it.
Here are some tips for designing with text on a photo:
Go Simple: The time-tested design advice “keep it simple” applies to text and images as well. You really want people to see both the photo and the words. Applying too many tricks can have the opposite effect. When working with images, use simple typography and a straightforward image for the best results. Remember to allow important parts of the image to show without obstruction and keep working n your design until text is clearly readable.
