Graphic Design Breadth Assignment #3

Article / Short Story Inspired Artwork

Focus: Choose at least 3 of the following design issues- Unity, Balance, Variety, Emphasis, Rhythm, Contrast, Proportion, Repetition, Scale, Figure/ground relationship

Goal: Create an artwork that illustrates the essence of an article or story that you read. You will develop a deeper understanding of the reading by creating an artwork that is inspired by it. Your goal isn't to make a book cover, but a finished artwork that is inspired by your reading.

Process:

1. Option A- Find an article to read that you’ve never read before. The topic of the article is up to you, but try to pick something that you’d like to learn more about. Don’t pick a topic that you’re already an expert in.

Option B- Read a short story. You want your ideas to be fresh so try to choose a story that you’ve never read before.

2. After you’re done reading, write down a few sentences about what you think the overall theme or idea of the article/story is about. Is there a lesson to be learned from the reading? What is the author trying to tell you as the reader? Is the author trying to convey an underlying message? Is the author using metaphors to convey any ideas?

3. Make a list of colors that you feel would match the mood of the reading.

4. Did you visualize anything as you read? Make a list of symbols and/or images that come to mind that helped you to understand the theme or idea.

5. Create several thumbnail sketches that convey the article or that “tells the story” through visuals. Symbolism is a great way to convey a message in an artwork! Avoid using the title of the reading in your artwork. In fact, the use of words should be used sparingly in your design. Demonstrate your understanding of at least 3 of the following 2-D design issues: Unity, Balance, Variety, Emphasis, Rhythm, Contrast, Proportion, Repetition, Scale, Figure/ground relationship.

6. Choose 3 of your best thumbnail sketches to turn into rough sketches.

7. Create your composite design on the computer.
