Convention Invention

Focus: Unity, Balance, Variety, Emphasis, Contrast, Repetition, Figure/ground relationship

Goal: Invent a convention/show for your most obscure interest. Design a logo, commemorative poster, t-shirt, signage, and an entrance badge for this fictional event.

What is a convention/show? An assembly of persons met for a common purpose. Some examples:

• Comic book convention (Comic-Con)
• Model railroad convention
• Motorcycle show
• Auto Show
• Boat and sports show

Process:1. Make a list of your interests and/or hobbies and choose your favorite.

2. Imagine what would be at the convention. Answer the following questions:

• Where will the convention be held?
• How long will it last?
• Who is your target audience?
• Will there be guest speakers at the convention? Who?
• Famous people?
• Does the convention lend itself to cosplay?
• Will there be live demonstrations?
• Etc.

3. Create a logo for your convention. Remember your target audience. You will want to advertise with this logo to draw interest. Most conventions require a fee or ticket purchase.

4. Create a commemorative poster for your event. Be sure to include the logo, dates, times, and attractive imagery.

5. Create signage to advertise or direct people to the event.

6. Create a t-shirt design that will be sold at the event. Will the design be on the front, back, or both?

7. Create a ticket or entrance badge for the event.

8. Look at all of your designs as a whole. Do the designs appear to be for the same event? Are the colors coordinated? Do all of the elements contain a similar style and font? Adjust your designs to ensure unity.
