What is AP: Studio Art all about?
AP: Studio Art is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of creating art at the collegiate level while in high school. It is not based on a written exam; instead, each student submits a portfolio for evaluation at the end of the school year of their completed artwork. The AP: Studio Art Program consists of three portfolio options - 2D Design, 3D Design, and Drawing - corresponding to common college foundation courses. Don’t worry, we will discuss which portfolio option is best for your artwork later in this course. The portfolio created will demonstrate the artistic skills and ideas developed, refined, and applied over the course of the year to produce visual compositions. Students will create a minimum of 24 art pieces through the course of the program. Student work will be informed and guided by observation, research, experimentation, discussion, critical analysis, and reflection, relating individual practices to the art world. Begin breaking down portfolio into the three major components of any AP: Studio portfolio: the Breadth, Concentration, and Quality sections.
Three sections of an AP: Studio Portfolio
12 pieces that explore the concerns of your particular portfolio’s focus (2D, 3D, or Drawing). These should show a range of media choices used at a high level of achievement. These assignments will be more teacher directed to help ensure you cover all the design concerns of your particular portfolio.
12 pieces that show an in-depth exploration of a particular idea, theme, or 2D design concern. Your concentration will be developed individually and be unique to you. These pieces will be more self-directed.
A selection of your five strongest works from your Breadth and Concentration sections that focus on good design. These are not five additional pieces, but your five best pieces from the year. In the early spring, they will be neatly matted and sent to the College Board for review in person.
