The model space (Model tab) is where the design is drawn to its exact size. While the paper space (Layout tab) is where the drawing is prepared for plotting (printing). Typically items that are less critical to the design will be added in the paper space such as borders and title blocks. The paper space is accessed by clicking the Layout tabs in the bottom left of the program.
Multiple layouts can be created so that one design can be plotted at different scales/ sizes as needed. If there are many layout tabs that not all of them can be listed, click the button with four squares to show a list of all layouts in the drawing.
The Page Setup Manager is where the paper size will be selected and from there, the scale of the drawing can be determined. To access the Page Setup Manager, click the Page Setup button in the Layout tab. This dialog box has the options to create a new layout, modify an existing one, or import one. The Page Setup image to the right shows the options available when creating or editing a layout with the most common items to change circled. The Preview... button in the bottom left will load a preview of what the print will look like with the current settings.
A custom title block can be easily created by using the rectangle, line, and text commands on a layer specifically for title blocks. This can then be saved as a block for future use and/or the whole file may be saved as a template.
AutoCAD template files (.dwt) will often include title blocks. For example, to the left is the title block included in the Tutorial-iarch.dwt. In some of the previous exercises, the Acad-A-H-Title.dwt file was downloaded and used and that template includes the basic FLVS FULL TIME HS title block. If the title block was saved as a block object, then it can also be inserted into the paper space just like any other block.
