Program Overview

The SCAPA Lafayette Piano program helps train young pianists in the techniques and artistic performance aspects needed to be an accomplished pianist. This training supports  students in following their passion for the piano from youth into their adult lives. This passion may become their vocation or be an integral part of their lives as an avocation.  The students come from varied backgrounds and are able to share their love of the piano and their piano experiences with each other throughout the four-year program.

Curriculum

The curriculum for SCAPA Lafayette Piano Majors includes the study of piano solo music from all of the major style periods from Baroque through the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to performing solo repertoire, students develop their collaborative skills through ensemble repertoire including duets, two piano/four hands, two piano/eight hands, trios, quartets and quintets. Pianists also study music history and the evolution of keyboard music. The program provides multiple performance opportunities for students. Piano recitals often include collaborative efforts with students in the other SCAPA Lafayette Arts areas, especially visual and literary arts. Outside professional musicians and piano instructors are regular contributors to our classroom.

Outcomes

The SCAPA Lafayette Piano program prepares students to continue musical study at the college level to pursue careers as performers, accompanists and piano teachers. As an avocation, students are also equipped to share their love of the piano as solo performers and as collaborators through participation in a variety of musical ensembles.

Program Accolades

Piano majors at SCAPA Lafayette have been chosen to participate in the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA). They have also participated in various competition opportunities offered through BAMTA, KMTA, MTNA and the Lexington Piano Guild. Students also participate in the KMTA All-State Piano Ensemble.
