Theatre students representing Lafayette Theatre walked the red carpet at the first ever Kentucky Bradley Awards hosted by The Kentucky Center for Performing Arts in Louisville. The red carpet event was streamed live!
All-Star cast performers included Logan Gwynn and Clem Connell along with others from FCPS high schools.

SCAPA Lafayette students are always academically impressive. This year was no exception. 84% of the 68 2025 SCAPA seniors graduated with honors. This included: 21 students graduating cum laude, 26 students graduating magna cum laude, and 10 students graduating summa cum laude.

The SCAPA Senior class of 2025 continues to impress with their academic and artistic accolades. All together, the class received over $18.8 million in scholarship offers from over 140 colleges and universities. 37% plan to continue their SCAPA discipline as a college major while an additional 6% have chosen a minor or closely related field to their SCAPA discipline.

At Lafayette, SCAPA Technical Theatre offers an active, student-led approach to learning. This program embodies project-based instruction, immersing students in complex, real-world projects that build critical skills.
Students actively practice leadership and collaborate with peers, developing vital critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication abilities. Two Technical Theatre students recently shared their work with the school board, including a video spot produced during this semester's Anastasia production.

The SCAPA Vocal program plays a vital role within the Lafayette Choirs, with SCAPA students of all majors participating as electives. The final concert of the year culminates in a touching tradition: all graduating senior choir students gather at the front of the stage to lead the singing of "Irish Blessing" one final time. This year, 30 seniors graduated from Lafayette Choir.

The KPA Bradley Awards are the official Regional Awards Program for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards), dedicated to celebrating young artists and promoting theatre arts education. This program partners with high schools across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, adjudicating their musical productions. The awards culminate in a ceremony at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, where outstanding students, educators, and ensembles are recognized.
This year Lafayette Theatre's production of "Anastasia" was a part of the first annual KPA Bradley Awards. Janeway Howard was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and our cast and crew was nominated for Outstanding Community Engagement for their fundraising efforts towards DanceBlue and the Simpson Family Arts in Healing Fund. Clementine Connell and Logan Gwynn will perform in the opening number ensemble to represent our school at the event on June 1st!

This year at the annual thespian induction and end of the year celebration 33 new members were inducted, making our troupe a total of 65 students for the 2025-2026 school year. We celebrated 32 graduating seniors for their work in high school and the work they plan to do post-graduation. Ellie Naish was awarded the Alexandra Hudson Simpson Scholarship for her outstanding work as a thespian, student, and in the community. We also announced the shows for next year, "A Monster Calls" in the Fall and "The Music Man" in January!

The Lafayette Theatre Beeley Awards is a student-led awards program featuring live student performances and a fundraiser for the Alex Simpson Family Art in Healing Fund at the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital. Through this event and prior fundraisers, the theatre raised over $1000 this year to support the Alex Simpson Fund.

In 2022, the Kentucky Department of Education released guidelines for the Seal of Arts Excellence similar to the seal of Biliteracy. The Fayette County Board of Education approved our local requirements last year. The FCPS Seal of Arts Excellence is an opportunity that allows students to make concrete connections between their artistic endeavors and the district’s focus on high levels of achievement, cultural competence, and preparation for the future.
The Seal of Arts portfolio represents students’ best work from throughout their high school experience and is a rigorous process. Lafayette students earned 44% of the total awards in the district this year.
Students received a medallion to wear at commencement, a seal on their diploma for each arts area earned as well as a notation on their final transcript.

Lafayette's three concert bands — Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony — delivered their highly anticipated spring concert at the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts. Their performances were the culmination of a semester of dedicated rehearsals and feedback from various educators, showcasing challenging repertoire.

SCAPA Lafayette recognized 67 seniors in its senior class of 2025. Seniors are recognized for completion of the SCAPA program with their SCAPA diploma and medallion. Of those 67 seniors, 19 were recognized with the 9-Year Award for completing SCAPA from fourth through twelfth grades. Every senior also earned the Fayette Co. Seal of Arts Excellence in one or more arts disciplines as a senior capstone requirement. Outstanding artists were honored in each discipline: Outstanding Visual Artist: Hannah M. The Don Trivette SCAPA Fine Arts Award and scholarship represents SCAPA Lafayette's most prestigious student accolade. Named in tribute to Don Trivette, a former Fayette County band director pivotal in establishing the SCAPA program, this esteemed award recognizes students who embody excellence across multiple arts disciplines. Recipients are chosen by a vote of the entire SCAPA staff, honoring those who demonstrate outstanding artistic versatility, exemplary character, and strong academic standing within their arts area. These are students whom the SCAPA arts faculty would be proud to call a colleague. In addition to the award, each recipient is granted a $500 scholarship from the Friends of the Arts School, SCAPA's dedicated parent booster organization.
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, Don Trivette recipients are the featured speakers at the SCAPA Senior Awards event. This year's recipients are Tate W. (Theatre, Choir, Dance, Leadership) and Clementine C. (Theatre, Choir).

Esme Morris, SCAPA Literary Arts sophomore, has been named the 2025-26 Kentucky Youth Poet Laureate. She will represent the young writers of our state: "Kentucky’s Youth Poet Laureates have been featured at prestigious events, including appearances at the Kentucky State Capitol, with the Kentucky Arts Council, and at literary and cultural gatherings across the state, from Hindman to Paducah."
She will also be considered for the National Youth Poet Laureate Post, most notably held by Amanda Gorman.

Douglas Waterbury-Tieman is a 2008 graduate of SCAPA Lafayette and who was also a SCAPA Don Trivette award recipient. He received his bachelor of music degree in musical theatre from Belmont University. He has numerous performance credits including in musicals, television, and instrumentalist.
He has been commissioned to write the books for two original musicals including Deep Water Ballad and Jenny and the Paper Pirates, and his original musical, Johnny & The Devil’s Box, was featured at Goodspeed's Festival of New Musicals in 2019 and received an award-winning run at the Cumberland County Playhouse in 2022.
He is a founding member of the NYC based theatrical band The Lobbyists, whose Off-Broadway production Seawife was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Music and appeared in the 2019 National Alliance of Musical Theatre Festival. Douglas is the founder of New Musical Theatre Nashville, an organization that supports the creation of new musicals.

The Lafayette Full Symphony Orchestra and Lafayette Choir recently joined forces for their third annual choral-orchestral performance at the Spring Orchestra Concert. This year's stunning collaboration featured the powerful Sanctus, Lacrimosa, and Confutatis movements from Mozart's Requiem. These combined performances offer outstanding opportunities for students to showcase their hard work and dedication to their artistic disciplines. Performance begins at 1:29:30.

Lafayette's Jazz Band received a prestigious invitation to perform at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. Being invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic is widely considered one of the highest honors in instrumental music education. It signifies that an ensemble has achieved an exceptional level of musical excellence, placing them among the very best programs internationally.

The performing arts department launched a fantastic new initiative in March called "Sunrise Sounds," offering a weekly Wednesday morning performance opportunity in the LHS media center. This program provides a casual and supportive space for students to share their talents before classes begin. These popular performances will continue in the fall with expanded performing groups. All three Lafayette Concert Bands performed at the District 7 Kentucky Music Educators large ensemble assessment event, held on March 21 and 22 at Scott County High School. Every group showcased exceptional talent, receiving distinguished ratings in every category.
Adding to their impressive spring, all three ensembles also delivered outstanding performances at the UK Wind Fest in early March.
A huge congratulations to all members of the Lafayette Band and our dedicated SCAPA band majors on these fantastic accomplishments!

Lafayette Choir hosted a Gospel Festival, featuring Dr. Roosevelt Escalante as artist-in-residence. Through this immersive experience, the choirs gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of gospel music, exploring themes of resilience, history, and community. Students also learned how gospel music has profoundly influenced genres like soul, R&B, and jazz, while honing their rhythmic, harmonic, and performance skills. The festival culminated in two performances, including a school show for feeder middle schools.

The Lafayette Chorale and Madrigal Singers were invited to an incredible opportunity with Dr. Everett McCorvey and the American Spiritual Ensemble at Transylvania University. The Chorale and Madrigals workshopped two of our performance pieces with Dr. McCorvey and learned two more to sing together with Dunbar and Bryan Station Choirs along with the American Spiritual Ensemble.

Lafayette Orchestras achieved outstanding results at the annual district large ensemble assessment event held at Singletary, earning straight distinguished ratings! All four string ensembles participated, each performing for three adjudicators and demonstrating their skills in sight-singing. The SCAPA string majors play a vital musical and leadership role within these accomplished ensembles.

We traveled with 21 students to Baltimore, Maryland to participate in the 76th annual Southeastern Theatre Conference. There, students watched high school shows from 10 different states, participated in college auditions and workshops, and networked with likeminded peers from around the country and attended the college fair. 6 students participated in college auditions and tech theatre interviews.

The Lafayette Madrigal Singers were invited to join the acclaimed UK Chorale for their concert at UK Singletary Center. Each group sang a concert set and joined for a combined performance at the end.

On Saturday, March 8th, SCAPA Lafayette Voice majors dominated KMEA's Solo and Ensemble assessment event! With 44 entries, they made up nearly half of the total entries, and an impressive 38 students earned distinguished ratings. Students performed pieces from their classical repertoire, including art songs, folk songs, cultural songs, or songs in other languages, receiving valuable feedback from an adjudicator. Those who qualified now have the option to participate in the state-level event in May for an advanced experience.

Lafayette Choirs achieved outstanding results at the district large ensemble assessment, earning straight distinguished ratings. Each of the four ensembles: Lafayette Chorale, Madrigal Singers, Advanced Treble, and Lafayette Singers performed a set for three adjudicators and completed a sight-singing assessment. Notably, Advanced Treble, Chorale, and Madrigals also received perfect scores in sight-singing. SCAPA students are integral to the success of our choirs.

The Lafayette Percussion Ensemble was a feature performing ensemble at the Kentucky Music Educators Association conference on Friday, February 7, 2025. A state or national conference performance is one of the highest honors a scholastic ensemble can receive. Parents, teachers, and district administrators were on hand to experience the performance. The Percussion Ensemble is directed by Aaron Jones and assisted by Paul Deatherage.

Each February, the Kentucky Music Educators Association hosts all-state ensembles in choir, band, orchestra, jazz band, and guitar orchestra and thousands of students from across the state compete for a place in these ensembles. Lafayette had a combined 117 students representing our school ensembles in these high-level performance opportunities. Students travel to Louisville and participate in three days of rehearsal with nationally-recognized conductors culminating with a performance in the Kentucky Center Whitney Hall and other conference venues! - FCPS.net

For the second year in a row a SCAPA Lafayette student has been named the Lexington Youth Poet Laureate. Eva Alcarez Monje was named the winner at the 2025 commencement ceremony in January. The Carnegie Center shares, "Recently finding a true love for poetry, Eva’s work is inspired by anything seen, heard, or experienced and can be found on coffee shop bags and college interview folders. Outside of poetry, Eva co-edits the Lafayette Times, volunteers at the Northside library, and walks aimlessly around downtown Lexington."
Additionally, SCAPA Literary Arts students swept the 2025 Youth Poet Laureate Finalist spots. Other finalists included: Mady D, Tony R, Meredith S, Esme M. Immediate past winners were Zoya Abbas (2024), and Kiitan Adedeji (2023).
January 31, 2025
Lafayette's main stage winter production of Anestasia featured a cast of 75 actors and dancers, a crew of 23 technicians, and pit orchestra of 24 student musicians. SCAPA students play a vital role in all aspects of the production from lead and supporting character roles to stage management, props, costumes, set design, lighting, sound, and pit orchestra.
Theatre is a place where many art forms converge into an authentic collaboration. Lafayette Theatre productions are not just for Theatre and Technical Theatre majors. Every SCAPA arts area was represented in this production including Literary Arts, Visual Art, Dance, and Music.

The 2025 Winter Showcase at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center will display art from four of our Fayette County schools from Jan. 16 through March 1. Stop by the venue at 141 E. Main St. to check out work by students from Brenda Cowan Elementary, Crawford Middle School, Lafayette High School, and Tates Creek High School. Lafayette's Chapter of Modern Music Masters (Tri-M) welcomed 47 new members at the 2024 Induction Ceremony in Beeler Auditorium. Those new members will join the 25 returning members to comprise this year's chapter. Tri-M is an honor society dedicated to school music groups with a focus on service. The chapter sponsors activities for Music in our Schools Month in March as well as other service projects such as an instrument petting zoo.

One of the newest KMEA All-State ensembles is the guitar orchestra. Kentucky is only the fourth state to create an all-state guitar ensemble. This is an outstanding opportunity for high school guitar students who participate in a state-wide competitive audition process. Selected musicians will spend three days in intensive rehearsals with culminating performance at the end of the conference.

42 Student Thespians traveled to Owensboro for Kentucky Thespian Festival
$39,500 dollars in total scholarships earned to universities at the Kentucky Thespian Festival in November.
26 students created and performed our Fall play, “Lily Plants a Garden.”
22 students received straight superior ratings on their Thespy presentations at Kentucky Thespian Festival in November.
15 students auditioned for colleges and received 52 different callbacks at the Kentucky Thespian Festival in November.
133 students involved onstage, backstage, and in the pit for “Anastasia: The Musical” coming up January 30th - February 1st!

The Lafayette Orchestras hosted their winter concert with performances by all four Lafayette Orchestras featuring over 150 students including 29 SCAPA string majors and members of the Lafayette Band to combine for Lafayette's Symphony Orchestra. Lafayette Band had 31 students earn a spot in the Kentucky Music Educators Lexington District 9th Grade Honor Band which will present a culminating performance in January at Scott County High School. SCAPA students include Tyler H, Hannah H, Beckett, K, Gracie K, Anjana M, Hannah O, Evan S, Julia W, Sophia W, Emily W, and Adam Z.

We are thrilled to announce that 11 outstanding Lafayette Band students have been selected to participate in the inaugural season of the Louisville Youth Wind Symphony (LYWS). This premier wind band, hosted by the University of Louisville Bands, is designed for advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion high school students from Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The 2025 season, running from January through May, promises to be an extraordinary experience, and we are proud to see our talented students take part in this remarkable opportunity! The Lafayette Band hosted the annual area concert on December 11. This included bands from our elementary and middle school feeder pattern including Jessie Clark and SCAPA middle school. Elementary schools were Wellington, Clays Mill, Stonewall, Picadome, SCAPA Elementary. In all, there were 650 total performers including 300 middle school, 150 elementary, and 200 high school students, including SCAPA Lafayette students.

LHS SCAPA 9th and 10th grade students collaborated with Best Friends Adult Day Center, which provides care for adults with dementia and memory loss, to create original art inspired by the adults' food memories. After receiving training on how to engage with individuals experiencing these conditions, students partnered with the organization to bring these memories to life through their artwork. During the ceremony, excerpts from the memories were read as students and adults were recognized and awarded certificates. Congratulations to the students for an impactful and inspiring exhibition!

Jason Brooks, the executive director of the Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts, led a presentation about the GSA summer program and audition process at SCAPA Lafayette. Opening the program each year are current SCAPA students who are alums of GSA who share a performance or presentation and an experience from GSA that changed them as an artist. At this year's assembly on December 11, Milo O (Tech Theatre), Janeway H (Voice), Logan H (Visual Art), Shelton W (Voice), and Logan G (Theatre) all performed or presented as alums of GSA. Each year, dozens of SCAPA Lafayette students are accepted into the life-changing summer program for young artists. Applications and first round submissions are due in early January each year. Two Lafayette SCAPA Alums were featured soloists in the 2024 performance of Christ Church Cathedral's Messiah by George Friderick Handel. The Cathedrals choirs perform the entirety of this monumental work each December featuring baroque orchestra and professional soloists.
Luke Dailey, baritone (SCAPA LHS 2020) is a 2024 graduate of the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. He has sung leading roles in musical theatre, opera and classical concert repertoire. Luke participated in Madrigals and numerous musicals while at Lafayette.
Quentin Prewitt, soprano (SCAPA LHS 2016) is a 2020 graduate of the Furman School of Music with a degree in vocal performance. She has sung leading operatic roles and concert solos including Messiah. Quentin was a voice major and participated in Madrigals and Chorale while at Lafayette.
Other SCAPA students and alums participating in the performance include Ellie N, James W, Julia W, Joey W (SCAPA Bluegrass), Madeleine S. (SCAPA Bluegrass), Abby Y, Staige P (alum), and Alden B (alum).

Congratulations to the Pride of the Bluegrass with the recognition of their 24th Championship season. The proclamation by Mayor Gorton was presented at the City Council meeting. The band was represented by the four drum majors and directors Dee Bishop, and Dr. Chris Strange.

The Lafayette Choirs hosted two winter concerts this season. The first concert held in Beeler Auditorium featured Troubadours, Treble Choirs, and Madrigal Singers, all featuring SCAPA students. The second concert held at Calvary Baptist church featured performance by Lafayette Singers, Chorale. Madrigals and combined choirs. Special guest performings joining the Lafayette Choir included the SCAPA Bluegrass Elementary Voice Majors directed by Amanda Wells, and Caroline G, playing fiddle on one of the combined pieces. The choirs include SCAPA students from all disciplines.

The Lafayette Madrigal Singers joined for the annual tree lighting at the Southland Drive fire house. The Madrigals have performed every year since the event's inception. The singers braved freezing temperatures to spread holiday cheer. Mayor Linda Gorton and several city council members were in attendance.

The Lafayette Madrigal Singers and Troubadours hit the road to visit several schools which feed into Lafayette. The tour began at Lexington Traditional Middle School, continued at Jessie Clark Middle School and ended the day for a full-school assembly at Wellington Elementary. The tour is intended as an outreach program encouraging all student to take part in arts programs at their schools.

Kiitan A, (Junior SCAPA Literary Arts Major), has been named a 2025 national YoungArts Award recipient in the Writing/Poetry category, one of only two high school students in Kentucky to receive this honor. This prestigious award celebrates the nation’s most talented young artists, with Kiitan earning the Winner with Distinction title for her exceptional technique, nuanced artistic perspective, and remarkable depth of creativity.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Choir students accepted to KMEA Senior High All-State Choirs. Students were selected after a competitive in-house audition and final audition process that includes singing a required piece with a quartet a cappella (without piano accompaniment), a solo, and individual sight-reading exercise. Lafayette Choir leads the state in sending participants to All-State Choirs. 9th Graders earned their spot by way of recorded audition submission. Both performance events will culminate in a concert at the Kentucky Center for the Arts Whitney Hall in Louisville, during the first week of February, 2025.

The award-winning Lafayette Theatre program will participate in the Inaugural Bradley Awards in Kentucky sponsored by Kentucky Performing Arts. A program of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as The Jimmy Awards, the Bradley Awards aim to celebrate young artists and elevate the importance of theatre arts education across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

The Junior and Senior SCAPA Voice Majors presented their Fall recital at Beaumont Presbyterian. The recital program consisted of classical repertoire including art songs and arias that they recently presented for their juries. Juries are end-of-semester performance assessment. Each student presents two pieces of contrasting styles for a panel of adjudicators.

The Lafayette Choir hosted their annual treble choir festival with invited choirs from Dunbar, Leestown and SCAPA Bluegrass. Lydia Alexander, from Echo Trail, Jefferson County's newest middle school, was the guest conductor. Lafayette's Advanced Treble Choir is one of three SCAPA choral ensembles students can enroll in. The performance also featured SCAPA Strings major, Annabelle R. playing violin.

The Lafayette Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras joined forces with the SCAPA Bluegrass orchestra to present Mischief Night, their annual costume concert in Beeler Auditorium. Over 120 students participated in this concert filled with and haunting tunes and mischievous melodies. The unique blend of classical and bluegrass music captivated the audience, showcasing the creative synergy between the ensembles.

The Sophomore SCAPA Voice Majors continued a tradition of sharing the music of John Jacob Niles. Niles is a Kentucky native composer and arranger who collected traditional American folksongs. The recital always takes place in the J.J. Niles Gallery in the UK Fine Arts Library featuring the composer's Steinway piano and surrounded by other artifacts from Niles's life.

The Juiliard School is one of the country's leading arts schools. Located in the heart of New York City, the school boasts a who's who of musical, theatrical and dance artists. Juilliard's admissions representative shared information about college majors, degree programs, applications and auditions. Juilliard also offers summer enrichment camps for high school students interested in high quality artistic opportunities.

The Lafayette Choir, Theatre and Orchestra traveled to Orlando to participate in Disney's Imagination Campus workshops for young artists. Students learned from Disney teaching artists in a professional and fast-paced environment. The choir took part in a recording session to perform and record excerpts from Disney's Lion King. The orchestra honed their skills in listening, expressivity, and performance for a culminating recording session. Theatre students combined singing, dancing and acting in a culminating workshop performance.

The Choir Gala is the opening concert for Lafayette Choirs. The concert features selected SCAPA voice majors as soloists as well as the Chorale, Singers and Madrigal choirs. SCAPA majors of all disciplines participate in the choirs.

Each fall beginning with auditions on the second day of school, Lafayette Theatre launches an ambitious goal of mounting a show in less than six weeks. The show will be the competition piece when the cast attends the regional and state competition in November.

The Lafayette High School Band has been selected as a Phi Beta Mu Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction Award recipient. The members of the evaluation panel were impressed with all aspects of your outstanding band program resulting in your unanimous selection. The purpose of the Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction is to recognize those programs that exhibit and exemplify the founder’s ideal of honoring superior achievement, moral uprightness, and promoting the international development of bands. It is also hoped that other bands will use your program as an example to strive to attain these same levels of accomplishment.

Rylie H., one of our SCAPA Literary Arts students was awarded Second Place for her short story in the statewide 2024 KET Young Writers Contest. The annual contest encourages creative expression and literacy development by inviting students in grades Pre-K through high school to submit original graphic novels, illustrated stories, poetry and short stories. This year, KET received 1,443 entries from students across Kentucky.

This is the first time students from the Literary Arts Program have been recognized at the Scholastic National level.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Percussion ensemble which has been selected as a featured performing ensemble for the 2025 Kentucky Music Educators Conference in Louisville in February. An invitation to perform for a state’s music education professional conference is one of the highest honors a scholastic ensemble can receive. The groups were selected by anonymous adjudication of submitted recordings. The group last performed virtually for the KMEA Conference in 2021. Congratulations to the students and directors for this outstanding recognition.

For three weeks, the students live, breathe, eat and sleep the arts at Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. Over 40 SCAPA Lafayette students attended GSA over two sessions this summer. It’s a thrilling, often life-changing experience, as they meet new friends, explore their creativity, and discover new things about who they are and who they can be in the future.

This summer, Janeway H. completed the Governer's School for the Arts in vocal music. Over the three-week intensive, she participated in masterclasses, voice lessons, and theory classes to enhance her craft as a vocalist. She worked on duets, choral selections, and one final solo performance in her time at GSA. She also made many new friends from all across the state.
