Overview & Curriculum

Updated January 2024

SCAPA Lafayette is FCPS’s highest level of service for gifted and talented students formally identified in the creative and performing arts. Emphasizing the arts while providing a solid academic foundation, SCAPA is a performing arts school that offers advanced and college preparatory classes in ten arts areas: Art, Ballet, Band, Contemporary Dance, Theatre, Technical Theatre, Literary Arts, Piano, Strings, and Voice.

SCAPA Lafayette provides students the opportunity to further develop and enhance their artistic abilities in a setting that emphasizes the arts while providing an outstanding academic foundation in a comprehensive high school setting. Students who attend SCAPA Lafayette take two classes per year in their arts area in addition to their academic courses. Lafayette offers nearly thirty Advanced Placement courses and an ever-growing list of advanced and dual-credit opportunities. Lafayette's rigorous Pre-Engineering program is also an outstanding opportunity that some SCAPA students take advantage of.

The full range of extracurricular and athletic activities available at Lafayette are open to SCAPA students. Students can also explore other arts disciplines through elective courses. We believe that one of our greatest strengths is the synergy between an outstanding arts program and a large comprehensive high school!

As a SCAPA student you are a Lafayette General, but also a member of this supportive artistic community within the larger high school. Together, Lafayette and SCAPA have a dynamic and positive culture that is inclusive and encouraging of student artists. Additionally, SCAPA students have opportunities to participate in out-of-school rehearsals, performances, masterclasses, theatre production hours, juried events, presentations or readings (as  applicable per arts discipline) as a part of participating in a community of artists.

Admission to SCAPA requires an application and districtwide GT Visual and Performing Arts Audition. The application period is in January with GT Arts auditions in February. Placement offers are made in March for the following school year.

FCPS Seal of Arts Excellence

The Seal of Arts Excellence is a new graduation recognition beginning in 2024. Senior SCAPA students beginning with the class of 2025 will complete the Seal of Arts Excellence as a capstone project. Students will receive a seal on their diploma, a medallion for graduation, and a notation on their transcript.
